  • Hi all! Can anyone recommend a Dentist in the Berkeley area? We're in North Berkeley, but doesn't have to be super close by. (I'm looking for myself, but it would be a plus if they take toddlers too). Especially great if the dentist can also put in a caps (and do it well), as I may need one replaced soon... but mostly I just need to finally get a dental check up (covid! ah!) Thanks! Jess

My whole family goes to Dentist of El Cerrito Plaza. Very conveniently located - close to BART and ample parking if you drive. I've found it super easy to make appointments and the entire staff is very friendly and helpful. (Not sure if they have a lot of experience with toddlers, but I think they do consider themselves "family dentistry" so worth calling and asking). We've had just above everything imaginable done there - tooth extractions, root canals, caps, crowns, cleanings, fillings, etc. They are a bit on the pricey side, but take various insurance plans. The office is very clean.

Dr. Farahmand at Crown Dental, hands down: https://www.mycrowndentalcare.com/. You won't ever need to look for another dentist again, our whole family goes there and loves it. Good luck!

I use Dr. Chan from Refresh Dental. He is located on Telegraph Ave right across from Whole Foods. I found him after losing our corporate health plan due to retirement. My whole family has been happy with his services.

I and my family have been going to Dr Mizono (510) 525-2899 at 730 Kains Avenue, Albany CA 94706 for over a decade. This is a father and son practice both are kind, present, patient and excellent dentists. The DH's are also fabulous. They take Delta Dental insurance.

I like Dr. Kristen Forbes on Solano. Their office also sees children.

Zarrin Ferdowsi in Kensington (10 min from North Berkeley) is excellent. My parents, my kids and I have all been going there for years. Everyone there is really wonderful with kids. (510) 525-2881.

We LOVE Ricky Singh on The Alameda near Solano Ave.

I go to Total Health Dental on Solano in Albany, cross-street is Ramona. I was grandfathered into the practice, started at its Oakland office years ago (may have been on a BPN recommendation!), my dentist sold the practice to the current owner, and he expanded the practice to several locations. I recommend them, high quality care.

Dr. Amy Lee on Solano - she is not only kind but skilled based on my experience.

For your toddler, I highly recommend Uptown Pediatrics in Oakland. My kids have been seeing Dr. Denise and Dr. Cheng since they were elementary and toddler age, respectively, and we've been very pleased with their care, their rapport with the kids, and their communication with the parents. Convenient to 19th St BART. Sadly nearby Donut Savant has moved, I guess we'll head to Blue Bottle afterward next time.

I've used Dr. Scott Levine for many years. His office is located at 1300 Solano Avenue in Albany — cross street is Key Route. He has done great work that has been complimented by other dentists. Could not have been happier with anyone!  (510) 526-8811

I strongly recommend Dr. Blaine Honda, he's on Hearst between Milvia and Shattuck. My husband, daughter and I have been going to him forever. He wasn't part of my insurance network when I was working so you may want to check your insurance. Dr. Honda is an artist at caps - I've had a half dozen. Never a problem with any of them. The office and procedures were clean and safe before COVID and extra so during.

I highly recommend Dr. Ota. He's in Berkeley and I've been going to him since I was a young kid! My whole family sees him, and I'll start taking my little one soon! He's really kind, warm, and honest, and he is a parent too.

I second Dr. Ota! Wonderful dentist in North Berkeley.

  • Our dentist sold his practice and we are not happy with the new owners. Any recommendation for a family dentist near Berkeley or Albany who accepts Delta Dental? Ideally, it would be a functional or holistic dentist but at the very least someone who doesn't push unnecessary procedures.

We are very happy with Gary Hale in Albany/at El Cerrito Plaza. I have Delta Dental and he accepts it. I went to him after being told I needed $5,000 worth of work done by a different, local dentist and he was my second opinion and was much more reasonable so I switched. They also have a 3D printer that makes crowns, so you don't have to go through having a temporary crown while the real one gets fitted etc. if you ever need a crown.

I’m happy with my dentist, Dr. Barry Kami on University Ave in downtown Berkeley—friendly, efficient, awesome staff. https://www.barrykamidds.com/

I really like Dr. Marjan Rusta on Gilman in Berkeley. Our whole family sees her.

Stephen Kobayashi is excellent. He has a great bedside manner, and doesn't try to push unnecessary treatment. He's at 727 San Pablo Avenue in Albany. His front office staff are very professional and friendly, and they also work with people who are afraid of the dentist.

I have been going to Kenneth Mizono for years. He is excellent as are all the dental hygienists. The office accepts take Delta Dental. the number is (510) 525-2899‬ and location is 730 Kains Avenue, Albany CA 94706

Laura Lawson Dentistry is great, they take a very natural approach and are very gentle but thorough. I've been going there for 3 years now, have had a few cavities filled my them. Located on Solano. http://www.lauralawsondds.com/

  • Hi BPN,

We have literally just moved in to Berkeley from Brooklyn and after dealing with the movers who basically ripped us off (don’t hire eastcoast movers moveeast.com) and paying them several thousands more than we agreed to, I found out the crown on one of my tooth broke.

Can any of you recommend a dentist you trust who takes UHC dental insurance? It’s gonna be costly to put in a new crown regardless of the insurance but any recommendations much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ania

I have the same insurance and see Dr. Pacheco at Total Health Dental Care in Old Oakland. I’ve had them do 2 crowns because I didn’t trust the last dentist I was at to do them. He is very gentle, friendly and helped me feel relaxed about the whole procedure. They also use a newer type of material that is supposed to be stronger than porcelain but I’m not sure what it’s called. You can also get an estimate up front before you decide to move forward.

    Good luck!

I really like my dentist, Dr. Sharma, at 3000 Colby Street. She takes my United Healthcare Dental.

Thanks so much! Really appreciate it!

  • My husband and I are looking for a new dentist, ideally someone located not too far from Berkeley. We don't need the latest equipment, fancy office, etc, but we do want the following:

    1. Someone who is not too old (because we doesn't want to have to switch all the time when an older dentist retires) Someone whose office has IMPECCABLE sanitary standards, disposable implements used or items proven to be autoclaved and sterilized between uses, staff with good hygiene, etc.

    2. An office that doesn't set a rigid time limit for appointments. The last time I had a cleaning scheduled, the hygienist had very little to do (I have excellent dental habits, multiple dentists have complimented me on my flossing prowess), but she kept insisting there was more to clean because she can't just me go after 10 minutes, and I, still working on advocating for myself, just sat there and let her scrape and polish layers and layers of enamel off my teeth for the next 35 minutes... Meanwhile, my husband's teeth are terrible, and he would be asked to leave when his time is up and told to come back later.

    3. An office that is mostly dentist run, not one that is one dentist who hires 10 hygienists, and that dentist swings by to say hi then moves on to the next chair while the hygienist cleans your teeth and that's it. My old dentist actually did my cleaning herself, imagine that...

If you know of such a dentist, please let me know. Thank you!

    Susan Caliri, DDS

    851 Dwight Way

    (510) 845-2864

I highly recommend my dentist, Dr. Amirali Rahmatian.  I've been seeing him since he took over my retiring dentist's practice in 2005.  I think he and his staff will fulfill all of your specific expectations, and in addition, they are all just lovely people.  The office is in the medical building at 2999 Regent Street (across from Alta Bates) and the phone number is (510) 848-7239.

Hello Judy - we have been going to Dr. Eric Citron in Berkeley.  He has one hygienist but generally is the one to do most of the work.  My experience is he does what needs to be done - not by the clock - but is very efficient.  Check him out and see if it fits the bill!  Good luck!

Dr. Marchelle King fits your requirements. (510) 549-0644 Both my husband and I see her. Highly recommended.

We got to Dr. Kenneth Mizono who is an absolute pro. He's in Albany on Kains Ave, one block east of San Pablo. Tel 510 525 2899.

I think that I go to the same dentist that you do (close to Whole Foods?) and have the same issues. I'm looking forward to the responses!

I have been delighted with Simarjit Singh, DDS (510) 843-1192 2140 Shattuck Ave Suite 701 Berkeley.  Small office; close by; easy to get appointments.  I'm a physician and I am impressed that she is knowledgeable, thorough, up-to-date, and responsive to my preferences (frequency of xrays, type of fillings).  She does the cleanings herself.

Well, Dr. Barry Kami on University Ave in Berkeley definitely meets the first two requirements on your list. His practice doesn't meet your third requirement (i.e., for a cleaning, you will get a hygienist and see Dr. Kami for a very brief time), but I have been impressed with how available Dr. Kami makes himself for things outside of cleanings. Calls from his cell phone to check on you the evening after he did your filling, makes space for dental emergencies, etc. I have a family of four, and we all see him, have been going to him for over 10 years for a variety of needs and are very happy.

  • There are so many dentists in the Alta Bates area near Telegraph and Ashby, I have a hard time choosing one. I am looking for a skilled person. If you have had had work done on your teeth and are happy with the results, I want to hear about it. I guess I want to steer clear of lousy dentists too, so if you have had problems, I want to hear about that, too. Thanks for your input.

long-time client of DDS Donald Dirocco, right next to Alta Bates. He does great work, and hygienists and office staff are all great. Super nice and professional. Highly recommended.

I've been a patient of Brian Assael for years and have sent a lot of friends to him too. Only good experiences. He's right across the street from Alta Bates.

Robin Whitley is great. I had to have  several crowns replaced recently, and she does great work. I have been pleased with the results. I’ve known her a long time. Robin is direct and straightforward. No nonsense. She’s also kind and honest. I would highly recommend her. 510-843-4434

I highly recommend Marchelle King, (510) 549-0644. My husband and I have been going to her for years. Small practice, greatly skilled, comfortable environment. Near Alta Bates.

We are fond of Ken Childers:

    here is his info:

    6116 Merced Ave.   Oak.

his office is in Montclair. Nice person. Tell him Steve and Diane said hi.

Dr. Penelope Yip and her colleague Dr.Murphy are phenomenal. I've been a patient for 15 years and my husband switched from his. 510-841-7424.

I would like to recommend Ariane Terlet, who I've recommended before on BPN, because she is a great dentist located in the medical building on Russell Street right next to Alta Bates. She is in a practice with another woman dentist and they have a number of all-woman assistants and hygienists so it's very chill. Everyone speaks Spanish if that's a consideration for you. What I like about Terlet is she's very skilled (she fixed my smile so it looks beautiful), she's personable (ask her about her kids), and she's altruistic (she heads up the dental department at La Clínica.)  The examining rooms have all-glass views of Berkeley and the Berkeley Hills, which is pleasant, and the receptionists are so nice. I don't like going to the dentist, but I do like Terlet.

  • Hello;

I am looking for a dentist who is up to date and living in the 21st century, with excellent qualifications and who

embraces a holistic approach (no mercury, etc.). Is there such a person? Would be very grateful for some

recent recommendations, many dentists mentioned on the BPN have retired, or are too far away for me to commute to.

    Thanks so much!

Laura Lawson on Solano Ave in Albany is exactly who your looking for!

Dr. Koppel is the BEST dentist on the planet!! I'm so fortunate to have found him on Yelp and UC Berkeley parents network.  I was so tired of seeing dentists who recommend unnecessary costly treatments. He is gentle, attentive, credible, meticulous and highly skilled and truly cares about your teeth.  His staff is very efficient, friendly and professional.

I can't recommend him highly enough!!!

We all switched to Dr. Edward Yeh who is located in Walnut Square in North Berkeley, right next to Peet's.  He is very unusual in that he is super careful, slow and deliberate.  Incredible staff.  I'm sure he can deal with your no mercury request.  Also, he does NOT push for doing work that is unnecessary.    It's like an old fashioned practice----kind, thorough, and just terrific.

Sandor Hites in Berkeley specializes in mercury removal and other wholistic dentistry options.

Yes, Dr. Laura Lawson in Albany, on Solano. The only complaint I have is that there is often a long wait, and if you have to cancel a cleaning a couple of weeks in advance, they can't fit you back in for several months. If you go, book an early appointment!

Dr. Marjan Rusta on Gilman Street in Berkeley is fantastic. She has a very wholistic approach, recommends homeopathic remedies, does
Cranio Sacral work and I think might also be a wholistic doc or ND. She has a machine that vacuums the bad stuff when she removes amalgam fillings,
and also gives ozone injections for deep nerve healing.  I've had a ton of work done in the past several years (replacement crowns, fillings, extractions, etc) due
to really bad teeth genetics and also bad dental work from other dds's and while a lot of it was traumatic and not fun I totally trusted her and all went really well.
    Good luck.

I second the recommendation of Dr. Marjan Rusta. I've been seeing her for many years, now she sees my daughter, too, and we both love her. No mercury.

We LOVE Dr. Ricky Singh on The Alameda in Berkeley!
