  • My insurance is changing.  I need a new primary care doc.

I have a number of minor medical issues that need oversight.  I see specialists but it really helps when the primary doc understands all the variables.  Because of these conditions I am someone who does responsible research on my conditions so I want someone who is not put off by my googling my health conditions.  I'm over age 50 and dealing with all the medical joys that brings.  I'm not into alternative medicine, but I love the way alternative medicine doctors listen and imagine possibilities.  If I could have that in a standard western doc that would be amazing.  Berkeley area.  Thanks so much in advance!

It took me a long time to find a PCP I liked, I I finally found Avis Logan, MD with John Muir Health in Berkeley. I, too, am over 50.

I love my PCP and I think she is as you describe. I am also 50 and have a few minor medical issues. I don't know if she's in the UC Care network, nor do I know if she is accepting new patients. Dr. Emily Caro-Bruce at One Medical in Berkeley. https://www.onemedical.com/providers/emily-caro-bruce/

  • Hi, all - I recently relocated to Berkeley and I'm looking for a primary care physician, preferably in Berkeley, but I'm open to North Oakland and Albany as well. I need someone who incorporates holistic health into how they practice and helps patients manage their health, rather than treating only once something is seriously wrong, and I'd like to be able to use my insurance (right now it's Cigna). Thank you!

I have two recommendations: 1 out of pocket, although she’s very reasonable and smack in the middle of downtown Elmwood Berkeley, and one that will take your insurance.

Neither of them is deeply ensconced in true functional medicine or certified through the Institute for functional medicine, though each is very comfortable with a more holistic practice of healing and conversant with different methodologies.

The first is Dr. Alexandra Johnson of greeting health, And the office is right next to the noodle restaurant and the intersection with Claremont on College Avenue.

The second is the Institute for health and healing, which is part of the California Pacific medical Foundation. I believe they actually now have an Eastbay satellite office for urgent care, but their mean “campus,” if you will, is at 2300 California St. in San Francisco. You can look on their website and see that they have a variety of practitioners and focus on up-to-date allopathic Western medicine but also definitely with a bent towards alternative medicine as well. I’m sorry to say that my two favorite MDs there have both left the area but they were equally trained in internal medicine as well as Ayurvedic and functional medicine. I would imagine that the practice is continuing to hire people of that bent.

Best wishes in your healing journey!

  • Having a difficult time finding a primary care physician in Berkeley who is accepting new patients. We just moved to the area and really need to find a physician because I have an ongoing medical issue that requires maintenance. I have Cigna PPO. I'll settle for seeing an endocrinologist, since my insurance will allow me to see a specialist without a referral but would prefer a family practitioner or internal medicine doctor who my wife can also see.

The John Muir/UCSF Berkeley outpatient center at 3100 San Pablo has Primary care and specialty care along with urgent care and imaging all in one building.

I've been happy with my care there so far.

Hi there!  We see Dr. Andria Johnson (Family Practice) and Dr. Jianyu Xu (Endocrinology), at John Muir Health in Berkeley. We also have Cigna PPO.  They're both caring, kind and knowledgeable physicians. Highly recommended!

My doctor retired and my insurance assigned me to a new dr.  — Carolyn Klebanoff. And I already like her a lot! And I can’t say I’ve ever had a primary care doctor that I really thought was great. They’ve all just been fine. But after doing a new patient video call with Dr. Klebanoff, I now feel like I have a PCP that is great   She was super responsive, friendly, communicative.

  • Does anyone have a great adult primary care doc in Berkeley or Oakland (Bart accessible)? Bonus if they are male and/or black (or have lots of experience and comfort with patients of color). We are not part of kaiser. Thanks!

Sutter East Bay on San Pablo Ave in Albany has many great doctors including several who fit that description and I would highly recommend.  One new doc I saw meets your demographic checklist and he was so patient and thorough and attentive, and I also like a few women docs and NPs I've seen there (they span many demographics so you can request your preference or take whoever is available first). I believe they're walking distance from El Cerrito Plaza BART stop.

I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Rollington Ferguson. He is a cardiologist by training but serves as my mom's PCP and has been a godsend to us. His offices are in Pill Hill about halfway between the 19th Street and Macarthur BART stations.

Dr. Floyd Hyuen in Oakland is a great internest and primary care doctor. He is the husband of former mayor Jean Quan. He was my doctor for years at Lifetime Medical in Berkeley, hen he moved his practice to oakland.

  • Hi-
I am looking for a great internal medicine/primary care doctor for an adult. Can you recommend yours or someone you know? Here are some of the characteristics we are looking for:
    -great bedside manner
    -well-trained and current
    -office in Berkeley or Oakland
    -open-minded
    -taking new patients
-is fairly accessible (to schedule same-day appointments, reply to email, etc.)
Doesn't matter whether he/she accepts insurance or not. Thank you!

You should look into One Medical Group. They have a primary care office in Berkeley and family practice in Oakland. Easy access, and providers are all very personable and kind.
