Adult primary care physician in Berkeley (PPO insurance)?
–Apr 30, 2025Hello! We are relocating to our beloved Elmwood from SF and I'm hoping to identify a new adult primary care physician for myself (a healthy 42.5 yo woman); I have Blue Cross PPO insurance and am also willing to pay more out of pocket for better care. Any recommendations would be much appreciated -- ideally taking new patients (despite the nationwide shortage). Thank you!
Apr 30, 2025My insurance is changing. I need a new primary care doc.
I have a number of minor medical issues that need oversight. I see specialists but it really helps when the primary doc understands all the variables. Because of these conditions I am someone who does responsible research on my conditions so I want someone who is not put off by my googling my health conditions. I'm over age 50 and dealing with all the medical joys that brings. I'm not into alternative medicine, but I love the way alternative medicine doctors listen and imagine possibilities. If I could have that in a standard western doc that would be amazing. Berkeley area. Thanks so much in advance!
Dec 25, 2021Seeking physician who incorporates holistic health, Berkeley
–Jun 16, 2021Hi, all - I recently relocated to Berkeley and I'm looking for a primary care physician, preferably in Berkeley, but I'm open to North Oakland and Albany as well. I need someone who incorporates holistic health into how they practice and helps patients manage their health, rather than treating only once something is seriously wrong, and I'd like to be able to use my insurance (right now it's Cigna). Thank you!
Jun 16, 2021Primary care physician in Berkeley who takes Cigna
–Feb 24, 2021Having a difficult time finding a primary care physician in Berkeley who is accepting new patients. We just moved to the area and really need to find a physician because I have an ongoing medical issue that requires maintenance. I have Cigna PPO. I'll settle for seeing an endocrinologist, since my insurance will allow me to see a specialist without a referral but would prefer a family practitioner or internal medicine doctor who my wife can also see.
Feb 24, 2021Adult primary care doc in Berkeley or Oakland
–Feb 9, 2020Does anyone have a great adult primary care doc in Berkeley or Oakland (Bart accessible)? Bonus if they are male and/or black (or have lots of experience and comfort with patients of color). We are not part of kaiser. Thanks!
Feb 9, 2020Hi-
I am looking for a great internal medicine/primary care doctor for an adult. Can you recommend yours or someone you know? Here are some of the characteristics we are looking for:
-great bedside manner
-well-trained and current
-office in Berkeley or Oakland
-open-minded
-taking new patients
-is fairly accessible (to schedule same-day appointments, reply to email, etc.)
Doesn't matter whether he/she accepts insurance or not. Thank you!Aug 6, 2016
Hi Lisa,
I am around your age and also have a PPO. After years of just seeing OBs, I searched for months to find a good PCP who was accepting new patients and recently found Kara Cunningham at John Muir on San Pablo in Berkeley. I have only seen her once (so take my recommendation with the caveat that I have limited experience with her), but I really liked her; she was thoughtful and spent plenty of time with me even though I was just there for a wellness check and no acute issues. I was really happy to find somebody I liked who could see me on a reasonable timeframe, given all the roadblocks I had previously encountered trying to find somebody! Hope this helps (link to her profile below).

In the olden days, all the doctors around Alta Bates were great. There is uncertainty currently, because of the planned closure or restructuring of the hospital.
I see Dr. Talia Gracer at John Muir Heath on San Pablo. My husband sees her partner, Dr. Sebastian Groot. Both are excellent.
