  • We just switched our insurance to Aetna, leaving Kaiser after 10+ years. We're in the market for a new family doc/GP (for 2 middle aged parents and a 15-year-old.) Looking in Emeryville/South Berkeley/North Oakland area. Do you love yours? Please tell me about them!

We love Katya Gerwein at Stanford. Chose her randomly out of the directory and then found out that my very close friend who is a family doctor used to work there and also loved her as a colleague and doctor.

In the John Muir Medical system outpost on San Pablo just north of Alcatraz I can recommend both Talia Gracer MD and Sebastian Groot MD.

  • Hello all! We've recently switched insurance networks, and for the first time, we get to choose a non-Kaiser provider (woo!).  Any recommendations for OB/GYN or family care physicians or CNPs at either Sutter or John Muir Health?  Both are possibilities -- we just want to find a solid (preferably female) professional, who could possibly be on deck for both pregnancy and pediatric care (though that's not a deal breaker).  Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi, I'm actually looking for a primary care doctor for myself and my husband, but saw your post and wanted to share my positive experience with the OB/GYN team at Alta Bates (Sutter). We live in Oakland and the prenatal care and delivery experience were all seamless, even though not as slick as at UCSF, where we had our first child. I definitely recommend Sutter for prenatal care. My doc was Dr. Venkat, but everyone I met there was excellent!

On the other hand, I had a pregnancy related ENT issue (long story) and the Sutter care for that issue was abysmal, ending in me being referred to UCSF by my Sutter-affiliated doc because she couldn't manage it. Traveling to UCSF was not ideal, but the care is unparalleled.

Lastly, we cannot say enough good things about Berkeley Pediatrics, when that time comes. I think they have affiliations with Sutter and UCSF (we've been referred to specialists at both from BP). Just the best pediatrician team I can imagine and wouldn't go anywhere else.

  • Our family used to see Emily Lash at East Bay Family Practice but then they became Stanford, she moved back East and many providers have left the practice. I'm looking for a unicorn -- Knowledgable providers who have time to get to know us and answer questions with efficient support staff (no long waits in the office or especially on the phone for scheduling and triage) -- a practice where providers and staff and patients all feel well taken care of. We are trying out the new John Muir in Berkeley but the phone wait time to schedule appointments or ask questions is ridiculously long.

Look into Sutter on Milvia in Berkeley. I've never experienced any wait time (over maybe 3 minutes) on the phone for scheduling, and when I've needed urgent nurse or on-call doctor support they do a call back thing generally within 30 minutes. They have great email support for non-urgent things too. I use them for my own OB/GYN & primary care as well as my kids pediatric care.

One Medical has a family practice office in Oakland. Meets your criteria!
