not strict dance Class for 5 year old

Our daughter dances every evening after dinner, puts on music and performance and she has an impressive feel for tempo and beat and fun moves she come up with or copies from what she sees. She would love to take another dance class. However, she tried Ballet but she did not like it for 2 reasons: 1. To scripted and stiff. 2. She wants to learn moves but she also want to come up with her own moves and show the other kids, so an aspect where the kids can be really creative and teach each other too. Can anyone recommend a dance class around El Cerrito, Richmond Berkeley, Albany?

I highly recommend Destiny Arts Center. It is in Oakland, but close to Berkeley border. They are fabulous with creating community, encouraging kids to be creative and find their own dancing style, and they do a lot of work to support self-esteem and self-expression. My daughter has loved being a part of this dance community.

We love our small group creative movement class in Berkeley with Dance Monks! Mirah and Rodrigo are seasoned child educators and professional dancers and very warm, nurturing people. I’d recommend reaching out to them

Try LunaDanceCreativity.org My kids loved it! (My kids are now adults). It's very creative, with the kids coming up with their own choreography. Their phone # is 519-8831118.

Hi, check out Shawl-Anderson Dance Studio in Berkeley. They have a Creative Movement class for 3-5 year olds. We tried the class this Fall with Juliana Monin as the teacher. It was a great class because it introduced the kids to all sorts of ideas about ways they could move their bodies to dance, but the choices of how to dance and express themselves was up to the kids. It was creative, fun, and a welcoming space for all levels of comfort when it came to participating. We loved it and have signed up for the full series starting in January.

Luna Dance could be a great fit! They teach dance concepts and then let the kids interpret them in their own ways. They’re all about letting the kids improvise and also develop their own choreography and express themselves. My kid spent many years happily dancing there.
