Hello! We are considering Pumpkin Seed Childcare in Oakland for our little guy. I see the latest recommendations are from 2018 and wondered if any has any new thoughts or advice they can share. It's so difficult to anticipate finding the right environment and personalities to help care for your kids. Appreciate your time ;)

Pumpkin Seed is a gem of a preschool led by an experienced, nurturing, and loving couple, Damond and Titi Jen. We could go on and on about what makes it great: the music and crafts projects, the home-cooked meals and end-of-day reports, the creativity of Jen and Damond and the love that they give to each child, their parenting tips and guidance, and the community they build among parents in the backyard at pick-up time and movie nights. In our search we came across many preschools with much higher price tags and fancier philosophies, but it's hard to imagine finding a place better than Pumpkin Seed to develop a young child's social skills, sense of wonder, early reading and math abilities, and confidence. While we have another eight months before our kiddo graduates, we're already dreading the departure.

I highly recommend Pumpkin Seed if you want a small, loving community of families that will set clear boundaries for kids. At Pumpkin Seed your child will learn how to play with others, will eat vegetables daily, will run around and play outside a bunch and will be potty trained with low drama. Jenn and Damond are highly experienced educators that set goals with children and families, and work with families on whatever the child needs. They differentiate play and activities based on what the kids are interested in. You will receive a written daily report of what they did at school and usually a run down conversation if you hang out after pick up. That's one of the many things that set PS apart- they actually encourage families to hang out in the yard and catch up with one another while the kids play. It is a really nice way to end the day.

If you want a school that allows children to do whatever they want and never heard the word "no" then Pumpkin Seed will not be your school. Jenn and Damond want the kids to be able to understand the rhythm of the day and will intervene if a child is out of line. But if you want a school that is loving AND prepares them for the structure and rigor of Kinder, then Pumpkin Seed can work for you. After three years, our son, who is a pretty anxious kid, was more than prepared for Kinder. He knew his numbers, how to write his name, and how to interact with kids of different ages. Plus, he can deal when kids are not nice to him, or when there is a conflict and a teacher isn't always there, which will be the case in most Kinders. When the pandemic kit, we did online Zoom school for three hours a day which was ROUGH for all (our son was 2) but it helped keep consistency and connection. And once schools were able to open up again ten weeks later, Jenn and Damond went full force to develop new systems and protocols to keep the school in person. Many places did not. Jenn and Damond are dedicated and energetic educators, and people you can trust with your kids.

We feel blessed to be a part of the Pumpkin Seed family. Our daughter has attended PS since she was 2.5 years old, and is now in her final year there. Under the wise and caring tutelage of Damond and Titi Jen, she has blossomed into an inquisitive, respectful, responsible little leader. We so appreciate the values they’ve instilled in her, and have no doubt she will go off to kinder next year with the emotional, social, and academic tools she needs to be successful. The Moodies have helped us guide our daughter through the thorny toddler years, and are never more than a phone call or text away. We cannot recommend PS enough—any family would be lucky to be a part of this community. Some extra notes that may be helpful:

-kids are required to be potty trained, but they completely help you in your potty training journey

-delicious and nutritious meals/snacks are provided

-it’s a small program with ages 2-5 all together, so the little ones learn from the older kids and the older kids learn to lead the littles

-The Moodies host a number of parent events throughout the year, providing an opportunity for the families to bond and get better acquainted

Feel free to reach out with any questions!

I cannot say enough about how wonderful Jen and Damond are, and how formative the Pumpkin Seed experience was for my kiddo (and for us, as her parents)! Pumpkin Seed Childcare is a warm environment where kids are trusted to be their best, kindest, and most curious selves. My older daughter graduated and started kindergarten in 2021, after being there for 3 years. Jen and Damond work to really understand your kid as an individual, while also helping kids see themselves as part of a community -- where taking care of each other and the space they're in is encouraged. The kids get ton of music, art, and outdoor education, and my daughter was more than kindergarten-ready when she left. And they potty-trained her at 2 years and 4 months. The food that Jen makes for meals and snacks is incredible and my kid is still talking about Jen's chicken curries, dumplings, and quiches, nearly a year and half after we left. Jen and Damond are wonderful partners to parents, as well -- they make themselves available to talk through different developmental stages and different techniques to support your kid's learning/sleeping/eating, etc etc etc. They host a number of events throughout the year to help the families of Pumpkin Seed get and stay connected, which is a lovely bonus. We miss it all the time, and can't wait to start our younger daughter at Pumpkin Seed in August.

I'd like to wholeheartedly recommend that you check out The Pumpkin Seed Childcare ((510) 633-2423). Our daughter started at the Pumpkin Seed at two and half and stayed until she went off to kindergarten at five.  Damond and Jen, the incredible husband and wife duo who own and operate the Pumpkin Seed, played a hugely important part in her growth, development and frankly, in who she is as a person and as a student today (she's now about to start high school!). The influence of caregivers on young children in full time childcare is enormous and something I don't think I fully understood as a first time parent - I knew I had to choose carefully but I didn't realize the remarkable influence that others would have on my child. What I learned is that it truly does take a village to raise a child - the Pumpkin Seed is the very best kind of village and we feel so lucky to have found them. Not only did our daughter learn a lot from them, but so did we as parents. Jen and Damond are simply wonderful people. They're the parents of three outstanding kids, they're warm, open, communicative, down to earth, energetic and smart. Their years of experience is evident as is the tremendous amount of effort they put into what they do every single day. Give them a call, go for a visit and check out this marvelous gem of a "village" right here in Oakland. All the best in your search for childcare! :-)

The preschool our daughters attend, Pumpkin Seed, has spots available due to a family moving out of state in May, my review is on BPN but I’ve repeated it here for your convenience. We literally can’t imagine raising our kids without Titi Jen, Damond and the Moodie kids too! Our daughters are becoming intelligent thinkers, creative artists, excellent members of a community and just all around beautiful human beings due in no small part to the steady leadership, education and guidance offered by this amazing place called Pumpkin Seed. I feel like my children are being raised in a larger family and caring community, something truly special.

When my older daughter started kindergarten this past year she was 1000% prepared, it was a beautiful thing to have so much confidence in her ability to thrive in a new environment. Pumpkin Seed has an amazing program, from field trips to the library, swimming lessons in the summer, daily hikes to explore and wonder, a curriculum that inspires, beautiful art projects, chickens, music, kite nights, movie nights, date nights, breakfast and lunch prepared from scratch with a menu that makes me salivate and my kids ACTUALLY eat all their veggies! The daily reports specifically written about my children helped me feel completely in tune with their wins, tough moments, and overall what’s going on at school. The advice of Titi Jen and Damond has been so essential to our parenting experience, we feel so supported! The community they work so hard to build have become our forever friends. We couldn’t be more grateful!

If you're looking for childcare and are lucky enough to have stumbled upon Pumpkin Seed, then you should look no further!  All three of our children attended Pumpkin Seed over the course of 9 years, and we could not have found a more nurturing, engaging and loving environment for them to spend their early childhood years in.  All of the reviews posted here are spot on - Jen and Damond go above and beyond "childcare" and take care of your children as though they are their own (and their own are an integral and lovely part of the extended Pumpkin Seed family!).  Delicious and nutritious homemade meals, the famous "Pumpkin Seed band", extensive daily walks and puddle jumping escapades around the neighborhood, excursions to the library and to the pool for swim lessons, family kite-flying nights, and so much more.  We love and cherish this family and are so grateful for the positive impact they have had on our children's lives!

I cannot say enough great things about everything that Pumpkin Seed has to offer. Jen and Damond offer an amazing balance of discipline and nurture, and know exactly when each is needed, whether to resolve conflicts (which are rare), or just make sure everything is going smoothly (not an easy task with 12 kids at any given time!). Their detailed daily report is truly something I look forward to all day. It tells you everything your child, and other children did that day, whether they needed to work on something, and what they excelled in. I sometimes wished I could attend PS myself simply for the gourmet lunches Titi Jen makes. :)

In addition to providing a full day of delicious, home-cooked meals, the kids get to: walk every day, rain or shine; take swim lessons; have a community-building movie night; kite day; dance parties; structured activities (numbers, letters); reading; free play; and much, much more. If I could use only a couple of words to describe PS, it would be family, fun, and perfect balance. I could not have wished for a better place for my daughter, and I doubt one exists. It is obvious that the Moodies really enjoy what they do, and pour their hearts into each and every child. Our seedling has grown into a perfect little pumpkin, all the while surrounded by positive energy, encouragement, and great friends. We LOVE Pumpkin Seed!

Pumpkin Seed is an amazing, warm, magical, and fun place! There are so many fantastic things about Pumpkin Seed

  • Homemade, delicious meals, often made with produce from their own garden; these meals helped introduce our son to a wide variety of food
  • Exploratory, long walks outside in nature everyday (rain or shine); the rainy ones were the most fun!
  • Wonderful art projects (like decorating California state t-shirts to take home or hand-dyed scarves for Mother's Day)
  • Music all the time (Damond is an excellent musician)
  • Family/community events to bring together parents and kids to get to know each other and knit the community closer. These included Kite Night, Movie Night, Holiday Party, etc.
  • Swim lessons (one week of swim lessons with his classmates was amazing)
  • Daily report (an individualized report on your child, from how many servings of lunch he/she ate, to how well they did on a scale of 1-5 with playing, paying attention, etc, to a paragraph(s) on what he/she did during the day, what went well and what he/she had trouble with)

Damond and Jen are super amazing people who make learning fun and really desire to help their students learn how to have good relationships with one another. They work on helping your child have great character, be a good citizen. When you join Pumpkin Seed, it is like joining a family (a really awesome, loving family). They are willing to share their experiences and wisdom regarding any number of questions/difficulties you may have and we benefitted greatly from them. They were able to know our son's unique strengths and weaknesses after only a couple months of being at Pumpkin Seed and thus understood when we shared what's been hard for us in parenting. They really take the time to get to know each child's personality and are so loving and affectionate. There is a lot of laughing and general fun.

We highly recommend Damond and Jen/Pumpkin Seed if you're looking for an excellent pre-school that will provide a safe, nurturing environment to explore the world outside and navigate interpersonal relationships. We were sad to leave such a lovely place, but left with solid friendships for our kid and us. Our son was more than prepared for TK, as Damond and Jen helped grow a love for learning, math and reading, among other things.

Our daughter is graduating from Pumpkin Seed Childcare in August, to start kindergarten. She started there when she was 2 years old. I can not recommend this preschool enough. I believe they have a few spots left for the early fall as there is a big graduating class. This is more than a preschool- it's a family based, loving and warm, fun, clean, heathly learning environment.

They welcome children from ages 2-5 for full days. No child's day there starts or ends without a hug and kiss from both teachers and a heartfelt greeting for each parent as well.

Jen and Damond are an amazing team that compliment each other beautifully. They have a play -based, yet structured program that includes art and music and play every day. My daughter has been writing since age 4 and is already reading, because of Pumpkin Seed. They potty train and serve healthy meals and have a large backyard space that the kids love. Jen and Damond take the kids either on a run or a neighborhood walk to the park every day. Each evening the parents get an individual email report of how our child did each day. On multiple occasions, they have called our home on evenings, or weekends to check in with us and our children when we needed it the most. They are truly a family oriented team.

Our son also attended Pumpkin Seed from age 2-5 and we will really miss this daily dose of positivity and fun in our lives.

Pumpkin Seed fosters a fun parent community as well. They have kite night, movie night and other events throughout the year for families to mix and enjoy each other.

Thanks for reading! dside

I don't know where to start with how wonderful our son's experience at Pumpkin Seed has been in the 9 months he's been there. We feel like we've really found a hidden gem.

It is a family-run, home-based childcare center, managed by a former OUSD teacher and his wife. Damond and Jen are two of the most organized, kindest and energetic people I've ever met.

As parents of three young children themselves, they are very attuned to the needs of small kids and do so much to ready each child in the small program for kindergarten. Every day they serve a home-cooked, healthy lunch and breakfast (we receive a printed menu every week that makes my mouth water), the kids get interactive circle time, educational opportunities for the basics like counting and letters/words, creative art projects and lots of outside play time/local outings. We parents get tons of hands-on collaboration and feedback on how our kids are doing. In fact, we get a written report every single day about our son's behavior, things he excels at, things to work on, etc. They also maintain a password-protected website where we can see pictures and videos and a description of what activities the kids are doing every day.

As parents of an only child, we used to worry that our son lacked structure or opportunities for socialization, but Pumpkin Seed has completely eliminated those concerns.

We don't know where we'd be without Pumpkin Seed! If your child is 2 or older and you are looking for childcare, definitely check them out. Added bonuses: it's affordable and they will help you with potty training. In fact, they got our son trained in one week! http://pumpkinseedchildcare.com/Home.html jane

Pumpkin Seed!

What an incredible place this has been for our daughter. She has grown tremendously over the years. As her last year comes to an end, we can only hope that the next step will be as rewarding as Pumpkin Seed has been.

Their preschool is well organized, caring, energetic, intelligent and supportive. After experiencing the ''franchise'' type environment where kids are often left to participate as they want or disconnect if convenient, we found the structure and individual focus a refreshing surprise. The recommendation from another parent was the beginning of a great journey for our daughter and our family. - Thanks Pumpkin Seed - Team Surano

Our daughter attended Pumpkin Seed for 2 and 1/2 years. We could not have found a better place for her to grow and thrive. Damond and Jennifer are without a doubt two of the most loving, caring, dedicated, thoughtful, caregivers and we feel truly blessed we found them. Damond's background as a Oakland public school teacher and Jennifer's background as an artist make an unbeatable team. Their philosphy and approach to child care is careful and well thought out intended to introduce and help the young minds they care for explore the many facets of our world. But more importantly, they focus on character and emotional development. We could not recommend them more highly and welcome further conversation with anyone interested in knowing more. I'd love to recommend a true gem to anyone looking for an exceptionally warm, nurturing, engaging, healthy, happy and FUN environment for their toddler - the Pumpkin Seed Childcare in Oakland (off Keller Avenue). My daughter has absolutely blossomed there and I attribute her growth to the tireless support of Jennifer and Damond Moodie, the talented, kind, smart and extraordinarily energetic husband and wife team who own and operate the Pumpkin Seed. Damond and Jennifer engage the kids in an appealing variety of creative art projects, music, plenty of outdoor time, dress-up and imaginative play, counting and alphabet games, and story time, while maintaining a comfortable, reassuring routine. Their home is bright, cheerful, clean, and welcoming. I'm so grateful for the recommendation that I received for this wonderful little home-based center, that it's my pleasure to spread the word to other parents. Great Daycare (Oakland, Oakland Hills)
I want to highly recommend my daughter's daycare, Pumpkin Seed -- a small center run by Jennifer and Damond Moody, two of the most enthusiastic people I've ever met. Damond is a musician and Jennifer is an artist, and their program incorporates art and music every day, as well as inventive educational games and lots of outdoor time. My daughter, just over 2, loves it (wakes up on weekends asking to go there). She has grown tremendously while there, learning not just abc's and counting, but also important life skills (she was potty trained two weeks after starting). Whenever I pick her up, the mood is absolutely infectious fun. If I were a kid, I'd want to go to Pumpkin Seed. They've recently moved to a house near Keller and Edwards. Feel free to email me, or contact Jennifer and Damond directly at 633-2423

Pumpkin Seed Childcare, an art and music pre-school minutes from Dimond Park has a couple open spots still available for 2-5 year olds. My dear friends, Jen and Damond, have developed a wonderful art and music program, balanced with opportunities for learning through free play. They provide healthful meals and snacks and highly engaging activities for children. They are open M-F, 7:30-5:30pm. Their program is ideal for children who are drawn to creative expression, children who may have been in a nanny share and are looking for opportunities to socialize and engage in group play, but aren't ready for a large pre-school. They offer a 3:1 ratio and are highly qualified teachers and caregivers. Jen worked as a nanny and cared for my own daughter. My daughter absolutely loves her- her energy and creativity are infectious. Damond taught in the Oakland public schools for 6 years and is a talented musician. Brightstar
