East Bay

We are a mountain bike club focusing on students in the 6-8th grades in the East Bay Hills of the San Francisco Bay. Our youth come mostly from Berkeley, El Cerrito, Albany, Richmond, and Kensington.  Our focus is on cross-country mountain biking which puts a premium on fitness and endurance. Our goals are to have fun, challenge ourselves, improve our conditioning and skills, build grit, and be an active member in a community of caring, supportive folks.    Founded in 2014, we have roughly 100 students (25-30% girls) and 50 coaches riding 3 times a week between November and April each year.

Wildcat Composite used to allow 5th graders to join, but they had to have an adult ride with them (a parent or other responsible adult). You can email wildcatcompmtb [at] gmail.com (wildcatcompmtb[at]gmail[dot]com) to see if they still allow it. My son just graduated from it and had a great three years riding with them. He started as a solid beginner and is now going to race for the Berkeley High team. Wildcat is a really good, supportive group of students and coaches. Good luck!

Sounds like you already found the Wildcats team, which is for 6-8th graders. I’m not aware of any teams in the East Bay for younger kids, but there are a few mountain bike camps in Marin that take kids as young as 8. You might start with that, and maybe see if they have any school year programs as well. Wheel Kids has some camps and school year programs in the east bay as well but they might be farther from your specified area. Good luck!
