RE:

It's been a while since I hired a special education advocate for my child, so I can't give current cost information. However, I can recommend your friend look into the Parents Place at JFCS. I met with an advocate at the JFCS in Palo Alto after working with an advocate from another organization and having a truly disastrous meeting with the advocate and adminstration at my child's school. It was very hard to recover ground with the school after the advocate acted unprofessionally. The JFCS advocate was not only compassionate, but well informed and deeply skilled. https://www.jfcs.org/find-help/center-children-youth/parents-place/

RE:  Parenting Classes in the South Bay

My husband and I used to live in Palo Alto and San Jose and took parenting classes at Parents Place in downtown Palo Alto. We really loved them topics and we even used them for individual ''counseling.'' Parents Place has a resource library and they are so open and helpful. They even have a drop-in infant/toddler playtime on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I believe. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and greatly helped us with our son, who has sensory issues. We love them! The website is: http://www.parentsplaceonline.org/peninsula Although they are associated with Jewish Family and Children's Services, they are open to the entire community. I highly recommend them! Maureen

RE: Moving to the Silicon Valley from the East Bay

... We might just be incredibly lucky with our street, but in eight months of living here, my observation is that in certain ways, it's not much different living here - people here are also very involved in their kids so there are plenty of activities, classes and events and you don't have to go far for them. The community centers offer lots of classes for kids and there's a Parents' Place in Palo Alto that offers some great parenting classes as well as other parenting resources.
