Reading support for 2nd grader
Hello! I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reading tutor or program in the Berkley / Albany area (or nearby). Our son went into 1st grade severely behind in reading and luckily his school was able to provide 1:1 support 5 days a week for most of the year and he eventually caught up to read just barely at grade level by the end of the year. We're concerned about him falling behind in 2nd grade and want to look into some extra support (as reading with us is definitely not his favorite thing!).
I've looked in Lindamood Bell and it feels like potentially a little more than what we need (and pricey) so I'm hoping to learn about other routes where folks have seen success. Or if you had a life changing experience with Lindamood Bell I would be interested to hearing that too.

Have you had your child assessed for dyslexia? I would do that first. If he does have dyslexia, you'll need an educational therapist rather than just a literacy tutor. If he's in public school. the school should be able to do an pychoeducational assessment for learning disorders. Learn more by checking out DREDF: https://dredf.org/vertical/pti/
If your child has a learning disability, he should get an IEP, which will lay out the responsibilities of the school district to get him reading. If he needs extra support on top of that, you can sue the district to pay for it. Been there, done that! My kid is about to enter college. He'll always have dyslexia but he's an avid, curious reader.
Lise Narath is an amazing reading tutor in Albany. Call soon! She books up fast.

Hi, I can recommend a tutor, Rick Mason, that we used a few years ago who is now focusing more on families who need extra support but who dont want to or dont need to do a full neuro psych evaluation, rather just that their kids need extra support to progress and also understand the underlying issues causing the delay in reading, etc. He is a great tutor for math, reading, and writing and I can definitely recommend him. He worked with both my kids (son and daughter) when they were around 10 and 8 respectively, mostly on reading and writing. His website is: https://learning-insights.com/... you can look at it and see if you think it's a good fit!
