Handyman(person) rates and recs in Oakland

Hello,

I am trying to get a sense of the current rates for handymen/handypeople so that I can budget for this as I have some things I need help with at my house.

Additionally, I live in Oakland and am looking for handyman recommendations.

Thank you.

I want to strongly recommend our "do everything" handyman. Selvin is a fantastic carpenter and electrician, and even does some plumbing.

He is that basically unfindable combo of skilled AND fast AND fastidious. He knows what to do when you show him a problem, and he does it right the first time, no shortcuts (unless a quick fix is what you're looking for -- he understands budgets too, haha).

A few examples of his work at our home:

- fixed/replaced dead outlets

- patched drywall

- installed a bathroom vent (which required installing pipe in the ceiling leading to a new exterior ventcap through the stucco)

- installed windows, framed them out with new wood, and repaired dry rot

- discovered and patched a hole in roof

- crafted a curved wooden handrail from scratch to exact permitting specifications

- installed humidity and occupancy bathroom switches

- caulk-sealed and painted our concrete steps

- installed a new exterior light fixture

- interior and exterior painting, including detail work around the caulk of the new windows

... and the list goes on!

He is also awesome because he sees little things and just fixes them. For example, he would enter through our old uneven back gate that didn't latch properly, and then one day I discovered he had just quickly fixed it. I hadn't thought it could be fixed without a huge hassle so hadn't even mentioned it, but with a few screws and a piece of support wood, the gate opens and closes so easily now. And he cleans up every day after working, leaving work-in-progress areas "live with-able".

Selvin is so capable, works so cleanly, is on time, is communicative via text in English or Spanish, and is just a really kind and lovely person to have in our home around our baby and pet.

He works in Oakland, Berkeley, and East Bay in general, and he's willing to go to SF if necessary.

We're in Berkeley, but our handyman charges $60/ hour plus any supplies used for the job. He often works with his son and together they charge $100/ hour. I don't think they are taking on new clients otherwise I would share their info!

Hello! When I do need some work done, I usually hire a specialist for each aspect of the job. And the reason is that a handyman charges anywhere from 80 to 90 per hour, which is good if you need some carpentry, electricity or plumbing. But if you need something like patching a wall, fixing a crack, paint, or cleaning a deck, 80 to 90 dollars will be too much to pay; usually, painters charge from 50 to 60 dollars per hour.

Our old handyman moved away, sadly. However, he was charging $50 an hour to give you a frame of reference. I hope you find someone!

I can recommend my handy person Peter Gill, retired contractor. Last time I paid him $60 hourly.Rate can vary - higher for carpentry, lower for painting.Text message preferred: 510-387-0103
