Need iron gate for a doorway

Dec 2007

We just moved and need an iron gate for a doorway and our driveway fabricated and installed. We'd like something well made but the design is not fancy. Can't seem to find iron working places easily. Any recommendations?

We used BelAire Engineering in Hayward after seeing a posting on BPN (we also had a difficult time finding someone, Serrotos Ironworks never even returned my calls). The project was quite challenging -- we needed an iron railing installed over a loft space which would protect the kids, but that wouldn't be an eyesore. We needed something custom, but didn't want to go the route of an expensive blacksmith. We were very pleased with BelAire's work and it vastly exceeded our expectations. Need wrought iron gate on busy street

Feb 2007

We need to put some sort of gate between our kids and the busy street in front of our home. I'm thinking wrought iron, but open to any gate/fence people you may know of. Never done this before...so don't really know where to start. Laura

We were very happy with Serratos iron works 510-636-9227. They did railings for our deck and hand rail for our interior stairs. dan

We really liked Tepa Ironworks and they were very reasonable and efficient. Jose is the owner. anon

Painting an old wrought iron gate

Nov 2002

We would like to paint the wrought iron gate in front of our house but first need to get rid of the cracked and peeling paint that's on there now. I read a while back that the whole thing could be dipped in stripper to remove the old paint. Has anyone ever done this? Any recommendations on where I could take it to be ''dipped'' or how best to remove old paint from wrought iron? tks Karin

This is an idea for painting the wrought iron gate. Call Poly Engineering in Richmond. The number is 510-233-1420. They paint metal objects like engine parts, etc. I just had a vintage metal bed repainted there. I was concerned that the paint that was on it was lead based and hazardous in it's disrepair. It was $180 for it to be painted. They strip it by sandblasting it. Then they powder coat it on an assembly line. They have lots of colors to choose from. The finshed product is very, very durable. Powder coating is supposed to be the most durable way to coat metal. Dana

To the person looking to repaint a wrought iron fence/gate, I highly recommend taking it to Bay Area Powder Coating in Oakland. We had them work on our old, crummy looking patio table and chairs. We got to choose from hundreds of colors. They sandblasted them, powder coated them a beautiful shade, and they look AMAZING. Powder coating apparently lasts longer than regular paint and it cost less than $125 for five pieces. When I was there I saw wrought iron gates and fences people had dropped off. Give it a try! Their number is (510)534-4762. Hilary
