  • I'm interested in hearing about current experiences and perceptions of St. Leo the Great School in Oakland. I've found some reviews, though many are older and mixed. It seems like a nice, small school with some interesting enrichment opportunities. However, it can be hard to get a good read in a short visit/tour. I'm particularly interested in student relationships/interactions, how they may support learning differences, and the enrichment provided.

    Thanks.

Are there any parent's who are currently sending their child to St. Leo's? We are looking at kindergarten. When my husband called to set up a tour for Kindergarten he was a little turned off by how school was pushing Catholicism. Can any parents comment on the level of religious education at the school. Background we are a Catholic lite family.

I would try to talk to other parents and see what they think. My first thought is that the school just wants to make sure new parents know that religion is part of the Catholic School.

My son attends a different Catholic school, and while religious education is part of it, there are plenty of non-Catholics, or non-practicing Catholics, and all sorts of backgrounds and ideas about the church.  I don't think they really dwell on many of the church's teachings that many in the liberal Bay Area would disagree with. At the grade school level, the teachings are a general Christian morality that is taught, and loving one another and treating all with respect is the main messages.

Re: Pre-Ks in Piedmont/Oakland/Berkeley area
My daughter attends St. Leo's Pre-K on Piedmont Avenue and we could not ask for a better program!!! She loves school and and has learned so much already!!! It is a very structured, organized, safe, clean and nurturing program. The principal and teachers are so dedicated to the education of their students. My daughter tells everyone how much she loves her school. Anon
