About the Program:

We are a small daycare based in South Berkeley, near the Ashby Bart. We have a beautiful garden and large indoor play space. At The Walnut Grove we believe that infusing activities with beauty, magic and exploration create stimulating environments where children can grow and nurture a sense of wonder. We feel that the way that kids see the world is transformative and believe in promoting that perspective is useful in the rhythm of the activities we approach.

My 4 year old son has been at Walnut Grove since they opened in June, and it has been a positive experience from day one. Olivia and Fede are warm, creative, calm spirits.  They are really tuned in to the personalities of each child and engage each child on an individual level. The space is lovely, with a variety of creative-type toys, instruments, books, art, murals, and cozy spots. (I seriously want to hang out there, build something in the back yard, and maybe take a nap!) There is also an amazing garden that the kids plant/harvest/observe in. I love that they get involved in making food, from picking and washing tomatoes in the garden, to kneading homemade bread.

Our prior care provider had become overly focused on rules and routine - sitting perfectly still at circle time, the same worksheets week after week, etc, and I was looking for a different approach. At Walnut Grove, Olive and Fede are full of fresh ideas and energy, and learning is incorporated into the day in a more natural way, by studying the environment and tools around them. Curiosity, exploration and fun are embraced in all their messy glory. It has been so satisfying to see my son blossom here.
