Local hotel with a good pool

Hello. We just had a second child, so now we have two wonderful girls - one is two months the other is just about to turn three years. For future vacations, we thought staying in a fairly nice hotel with room service and a nice indoor pool would be a good option. We don't want to travel too far. We live in Oakland. Any suggestions on places in SF, the greater bay area - up to about a 4 hour drive - that fits the description would be greatly appreciated.
If you end up staying local you should consider the Renaissance Hotel in Walnut Creek. Their pool/spa area is wonderful and very family oriented. It's a little respit in the neighborhood. Dore
I'm surprised that no one has suggested the Doubletree at the Berkeley Marina. They have a nice indoor pool in a glass-enclosed annex (from which you can see the Bay). My sister's family stayed there on a recent visit and we had a great time swimming with them. We like to swim
Parents in town and need a place to stay

My husband and I are expecting our first child in a couple of weeks and both sets of our parents are hoping to come for the birth. We have no place for them to stay in our home. I would love some ideas of not too expensive & decent hotels in Berkeley or if anyone had a back house or knew of furnished homes for rent on a short term basis. We live in North/West Berkeley. I was in the same situation when both my kids were both - I live in Rockridge and our small 2/1 couldn't fit everyone. My mom is not an urban person and my husband's parents are older, not adventurous and on a budget. What we found worked best was the Courtyard by Marriott in Emeryville. The mall across the street is easy to walk to and has restaurants and entertainment (movies, bookstore). There is also an indoor pool so we were able to bring our toddler over and he had a great time. It's not cheap but cheaper than the Claremont (which is the closest hotel to where I live). If you have AAA, they do offer a discount. Good luck. brenda
My folks like to stay at the Woodfin in Emeryville. Also the hotel at the Berkeley Marina but they prefer the Woodfin. There is also the Brick Path B in Berkeley on Marin Ave near Colusa. stay in Berkeley
My husband and I just moved here this summer and we needed a place in Berkeley to stay during two house-hunting trips plus for about a week when we were waiting for our moving van. We were very happy at the Rodeway Inn at 1461 University Avenue. It isn't fancy and rooms aren't large, but it is clean and quiet as well as reasonably priced. The staff were very helpful too. Breakfast is included and rooms have microwave and fridge. There are restaurants within easy walking distance (just around the corner) plus there is a small Andronico's one block away for getting groceries. I walk for exercise every day and found nice, safe routes that took me through a park and up to Shattuck for coffee and such. Best of luck to you on your coming baby! I suggest the Rose Garden Inn, off of Telegraph in Berkeley. It's just a few blocks away from Whole Foods, which could be convenient for you if you need them to pick up any food or meals for you. It's a bed and breakfast, so that would be convenient for them, with the food in the morning. Also, if you are delivering at Alta Bates, they could even walk to and from the hospital. Good luck! Affordable SAFE hotel around Oakland

My 3 friends (females) are going to come to visit soon for 2 days and I'd like to get recommendations for affordable SAFE hotel around Oakland. If anybody had any experience with hotels there or not too far away please advice. I afraid that most unexpensive places are unsafe. need safe hotel
It was a number of years ago, but for our wedding my husband's suburban Southern family stayed at the Washington Inn in Old Oakland and quite enjoyed it. At first my husband wanted to find some soulless chain hotel in Contra Costa because he was nervous about safety, urine in doorways, etc. But he was quite impressed with the Washington Inn, and the guests seemed to like it. I checked the archives and the last similar question was form 2003 so I thought I'd go ahead and post this I am due to have my second baby in Late January. My parents will be coming for the birth. They would like to have their own place to stay. I'd love for it to be nearby (We live in Rockridge, which contrary to recent newspaper reports is still in Oakland) so they can pop back and forth easily. It also seems that a guest house/short term housing or one of those executive stay motels might provide them with more services and be more affordable than a motel. So does anyone have any ideas. Also I tried checking sublets/temporary listings for them, but most of them were for much longer term, so I'd love hints on which listings to check or referral services for this sort of thing. I am trying to convince them to make longer visits a regular thing. Kirsten

People seeking short term housing (or any type of housing) may check the University's Cal Rentals website to determine eligibility for services: www.calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu. If unsure about eligibility, send an inquiry to homeinfo[AT]berkeley.edu. Generally, one must be a UC Berkeley student, employee or visitor here on official status (post doc, visiting scholar, sabbatical visitor) to be eligible. An exception is in the summer months: non-UC Berkeley students are eligible to obtain the student summer sublets if they are attending summer session, doing summer work in the Bay Area or simply vacationing here over the summer. Likewise, professional people or academics who are here to get training, work or teach over the summer may obtain the Faculty/Staff sublets.
If you have no UC affiliation but would still like to get the rental listings, you may join the California Alumni Association as a friend of UC Berkeley: one of the benefits of membership is eligibility to obtain the Faculty and Staff listings. There is a fee for both the Alumni Association membership as well as the listing services.

I'm looking for recommendations for B and short-term (1-4 weeks) studio rentals in the North Berkeley, Kensington, Albany area. We would like some options for my parents who are visiting this winter. Kitchen is not a necessity but the option to walk to/prepare coffee and breakfast is a plus. Hi there My parents stayed in this B last February and loved it. It is on Marin Avenue up near Andronicos so it is easy to walk to Solano and pick up coffee etc. You can stay with or without breakfast thrown in. I think she has 3 rooms. Well, I don't know what your friend's style is (what they would consider ''romantic''), but I do know that it can be difficult to find a place to stay for only one night (so many places seem to require two nights stay). That being said, when my husband and I got married, some friends of ours did the same thing: paid for a night at a bed & breakfast of our choice. I did some research and found a wonderful place that is *really* inexpensive: Redwood House in the Oakland hills. We got a Master suite style room (bedroom with canopy bed, sitting room with TV and a huge bathroom with marble and a sunken tub with a view of the bay), plus breakfast for $120/night. The owner, Don, is wonderful, very funny and sweet (though he's VERY talkative, so if they don't like that, this might not be the place -- not to worry, he does respect your privacy). Essentially, this is his home and he rents out 2 rooms. The house is gorgeous, with a bird aviary in the entrance, a solarium off of the master suite and it's FILLED with art and decorative objects. I have used Priceline twice to book rooms at the Doubletree Marina for $60/night.
The Doubletree Marina has a restaurant, two pools, hot tub, etc., etc., the rooms are really nice, it's a 3-star hotel but as you know it's off the beaten path, I think that's why they're on Priceline. The Doubletree is near Adventure Playground and has nice views and garden areas you can enjoy with your children.
While you can't specify a hotel on Priceline.com, you can ask for 3-star hotels ONLY in Berkeley and you will inevitably get the Doubletree Marina. I put in 60 on at least 3 occasions and it worked. Good luck. Gizella

Try the Garrett Mansion- they have a B & B and an apartment you can rent on Union Street a couple of blocks from Park Street. Mansion www.garrattmansion.com My mom stayed there last year when we had our baby and it worked really well for us. I have also heard that Coral Reef Motel near South Shore Shopping mall is nice inside though I thought their prices were a little steep for what it is. Juliette

Out of ignorance, I can't recommend any hotel with a kitchen. Consider reposting your query, along with dates and contact info, in the ''abode'' section of these newsletters. Your best option might be to sublet (or swap) a family home in the East Bay. I'd have offered you mine for much less than a hotel if only I'd known your visit would overlap with my absence. That way, you'd get a (double) stroller, crib, high chairs, etc. If you live somewhere terrific, a home exchange might work too. Anonymous

There are a number of places now in Emeryville that are suite hotels. I think there's a Woodfin, an Extended Stay America and some sort of suite in the Bay Street complex.
The Golden Bear on San Pablo and Cedar has some units with kitchens; La Posada on Walnut offers kitchens (although usually for longer stays); in Emeryville there's a new ''Extended Stay America'' that offers cooking along with high speed internet connections and also there's Woodfin Suites (more expensive, I think); and also there are two places in Alameda--the Coral Reef and the LinOaks. I am looking for a hotel or bed and breakfast near the Montclair or Glenview areas of Oakland. I know it is a long way off, but we have relatives coming from out of town for the holidays and I'd like to check into some places for them to stay. Redwood House is a b in Redwood Heights run by Don Tyler. He has two bedrooms and the space is quite nice... Great views. It's not a full time job for him (he teaches in the Oakland Public Schools) so he's not there all the time, but is very welcoming when he is. My father and brother really liked the food, but two other siblings didn't (too much asian fusion), so be clear if what you want is straightahead pancakes. He's about $90 a night. I've checked out a couple of places, but was wondering if anyone out there has any favorite places that are close to Rockridge or Elmwood (they'll have a car, so it doesn't have to be precise). My sister and her husband spent three nights in October at the Elmwood House, a B & B on College Avenue at Parker Street in the Elmwood district. They enjoyed their stay. Five years ago I was here in Berkeley househunting and got a list of B from the ''Berkeley and Oakland Bed and Breakfast Network.'' At the time the contact was Mary Leggett (654-0648) who has a B in the Claremont Hills. I also remember visiting a great B from the list that was on Alvarado in the Claremont Hills and would probably be perfect for your parents. The owner was Mary Harrow, and her number is 848-1431. Her place was really nice (and so was she), but it wasn't right for us because we had two adults and a child, and the room she had available at the time couldn't accomodate us. It is close to the gourmet ghetto and could work if your folks have a car. It is called Nura's Place and the phone contact number is 841-4202. You didn't say how much you are willing to pay. We used a B in San Francisco that we just loved. But it is quite pricey. We stayed at The Inn San Francisco for our Wedding night, and also for the first couple of anniversaries. The room was well over $200/night, but the particular one we had also had a *private* hot tub. The other rooms were less expensive, some quite a bit less. Some rooms have fireplaces, and there is also a shared hot tub on site. It's located within walking distance of the Noe Valley area in SF. They have a web site at: http://www.innsf.com/ . This may sound crazy -- it's in the heart of Berkeley but still a getaway: Granny's Bed and Breakfast on Telegraph. We stayed there the night before and two nights after we got married. (My husband's parents were at our house, in our bed, and I nixxed the idea of spending our weeding night on the fold-out in the living room!) The thing about Granny's is that we really felt away from it all, it has the total B atmosphere.

As we are due to have our baby any day now, relatives from the East Coast are wondering about places to stay in the Oakland area. The Claremont is definitely outside of their price range (not to mention not wanting to support anti-union activity). Does anyone have some good hotels to suggest? We live near Piedmont Ave. in Oakland, so we'd like the hotel to be within, say, 10 minutes of home. Thanks allison
We used to live in that area, and I don't have any hotels to recommend, but our visiting relatives have stayed at a few bed and breakfasts that are right in that neighborhood. I'll list them below, but it's been a few years, so I don't know if these are all still in business:
Bedside Manor (452-4550) The Rose Suite (763-1371) A private studio apartment -- good for longer stays The Bates House (893-3881) I think this is a little closer to downtown Oakland than the others, which are between Piedmont and Grand.

My parents have stayed in the Washington Inn (downtown, near the Marriot), which was kind of quirky but worked well enough. They've also stayed at Jack London Square (Jack London Inn, I think, which is really run-down). I also remember hearing about a small B somewhere near the Oakland Rose Garden. Check out the Lake Merritt Hotel -- cute, old, right on the lake, last time I looked about $125 a night. The downtown Oakland Marriott is a reasonable convention hotel, you might be able to get good rates there depending on what's going on. That part of Oakland isn't so great after dark (I work in the area), so if your relatives are prone to solo midnight strolls, I'd give it a miss. Cheap, but respectable is the Best Western on the corner of Third and Broadway -- it's the one attached to the Buttercup Restuarant. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but the rooms are nice, good service, pool. Walk to Jack London Square. Ditto the bit about midnight strolls. Consider also the Emeryville hotels, easy to reach from that part of Oakland if you head down 40th St. Carolyn

This summer we had a wedding in Berkeley and had to research the area for motels. The best deal we found was at the faculty club on the University campus. My parents stayed there and loved it. It was cheaper than the average decent motel and the rooms are lovely. However, they book up fast so you have to call in advance. I really like the Berkeley City Club. It's a Julia Morgan building, extraordinarilly beautiful, and centrally located between campus and downtown. Prices run about $80 a night. Dashka
I usually put friends and family (if too numerous to accomodate at our place) into the Rose Garden Inn (Telegraph/Stuart) or the Berkeley City Club. Both are very nice and quaint and have a touch of classyness and old-world - although they are not super bargains - rooms will cost 80 - 100/night. AJPlow

Heather 9/99 Hi, I am trying to find places to stay for some upcoming conference attendees who are looking for reasonable ($50 - $85/night) rooms fairly close to campus, and the local hotels are either much too expensive or have reputations as drug sales points. Does anyone know where I can look for this kind of info, or have any direct recommendations for me? It was certainly a gamble, you don't know which hotels Priceline thinks is a 3-star, and you don't find out until AFTER you've paid, and it is all very nonrefundable. The other bit of potential nastiness is that the room is potentially only double occupancy so if you need more than two people the hotel might complain -- the Radisson did not however. One final element of the Priceline game: if you don't get a hotel at that price, you need to change the level of quality or the dates before you can bid once more. The Berkeley Marina Radisson offers a free shuttle to the North Berkeley BART. By the way, I note that several of the links suggest the Hotel Shattuck which sadly, is no more!

We stayed at the Coral Reef Motel/Suites in Alameda last December for about 3 weeks in between a house sale and purchase. We had a one bedroom suite with full kitchen (fridge, oven, stove, pots/pans/dishes, but no microwave). The bedroom had a queen-size bed and they gave us a roll-away for the kids (2 pre-schoolers) to sleep on (though it usually ended up that my husband got the roll-away!) The suites are a little more expensive than the motel rooms, which also have a kitchenette area. I believe the motel rooms have two queen beds. The motel staff were really nice and accommodating. There's an outdoor swimming pool and coin laundry on site. It's located .5 block from the beach and across the street from the South Shore Shopping Center. My only complaints were that 1) even though our room was non-smoking, we could smell the cigar smoke from the room next door, and 2) the carpets were really dirty. We didn't complain about these things, but I'm sure the staff would have done what they could to fix it if we had. I think we paid about $620+tax per week. The other clientele seemed to be vacationers, folks on business, and the flight crew for the Met Life blimp. If you need a short-term place with a kitchen, I'd recommend that you check it out.

I don't know of any places under $70/night, but there are a lot of nearby places in the $70-$90 range - some of these will give you a discount if you are on official University business - not sure what that means but it may include student discounts - people visiting my research project have stayed in some of these and gotten a discount: - Bancroft Hotel - Durant Hotel - Hillegas House (B) - Berkeley City Club Also, the Women's Faculty Club, if you know a member who can reserve a room for you, has nice rooms for about $75/night. Tip: membership in the WFC is only about $7/month. As far as I know, any UCB staff or faculty member can join. It's a nice place to put up out-of-town guests plus they have the best food on campus!

In response to the inquiry about accommodations around $60 or less, I'd be really curious if anyone finds anything in Berkeley or nearby that is not total sleaze at that price. . .I used to recommend the Days Inn in Emeryville for decent accommodations around $65 a night, but now it's a Sheraton and the rates are at least $100! Community Living puts out a Hotel/Motel list, and we do list the cheaper places because we feel compelled to list whatever we can that would fit a student budget, but frankly, many of these places are not very nice and we have had some complaints. . .

For Albany Village available summer sublets contact the Apartment Assignments office at 642-4109. If you find a sublet on your own, have the tenant call the assignments office so a sublease agreement can be drawn up to protect YOU. Lots of illegal sublets turn into disasters here for the subletees.
Check out the Berkeley City Club in downtown Berkeley. I haven't stayed there but I've been to events there and had dinner in the restaurant. It's a beautiful building designed by Julia Morgan with a gorgeous indoor pool and the rooms look charming. https://www.berkeleycityclub.com/

Check out the Rose Garden Inn on Telegraph. It’s in Berkeley and pretty cute. Small rooms but charming. The serve a nice breakfast and it’s pretty close to you, campus and college ave.
