  • We're looking for a reliable and cost-effective remodeling contractor for a kitchen renovation and associated projects. Looking for recommendations from recent remodeling projects, in the last two to three years.

I am happy to recommend Emanuel with BuildMark. He did an amazing job on our kitchen remodel that also had some structural work (removed a load bearing dividing wall). The project was completed in the expected timeframe and it was nice to know he had lots of experience with similar designs. His phone number is 510-484 5765 and email: emanuel [at] buildmarkinc.com

We recently used Avila Construction Group to do a major renovation (kitchen, bath, bath addition) and then build an ADU, started working with them in 2021 on the main house, finished the ADU last week (phew!).

They are professional, talented, detail oriented, easy to communicate with, and do high quality work. They are not the cheapest, but definitely not the most expensive, and the value you get for your money in feeling listened to, having a kind, polite, skilled crew doing the work, and all the design and effectiveness recommendations the team gives as they work felt very worth the cost to us. The team would suggest things that ended up making even small details work better (ie small trim details better lining up or matching between rooms to help things feel cohesive, clever solutions to address fitting things effectively in small spaces, etc).

Francisco, the lead GC, studied architecture at Cal and brings both a care to construction detail as well as an aesthetic eye, and an unbeatable customer service attitude (Always willing to go above and beyond to make things right). He's also pretty tech savvy and we used Basecamp to manage the project together which I really appreciated — it kept all our updates, photos of work, punch lists, documents, etc. coordinated and easy to reference which was helpful when there are so many details to track. We also had some difficulty with inspectors (confusing and contradictory requirements and code interpretations, rudeness) and he was always patient and gracious which really helped smooth the way for sign off.

    Could not more highly recommend.

We used Eco Home Remodeling for our kitchen remodel this summer. We absolutely love the work that Alin and his crew did in our kitchen. From first contact, Alin was very responsive. He quoted the job would take 5 weeks and that’s exactly what it took. The final cost was also the quoted estimate without any additional charges. He was very professional and easy to work with. He has an excellent attention to detail and was always willing to explain things to us which we really appreciated. We are very happy with the end result and are highly recommending them. You can reach Alin at 510 697 0679 or by email admin [at] ecohomeremodel.com

  • Hello,

We moved to Rockridge in May. We have a beautiful but dated Mediterranean style house and would like to remodel the kitchen and bathrooms. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable contractor? We're looking for someone who is willing to engage in the design process and tell us what is/what is not possible as we select and source interior elements, appliances, etc.

    Thanks in advance,

    Katherine

Yes, yes. I can highly recommend Andrew Gregor, architect/builder/general contractor and owner of Blue Dog Construction and Renovation. He is a full service quality professional, honest, straight-forward and has a very talented and tidy crew. I have used him as have about 15 of my friends and we all highly endorse him. www.bludogrenovation.com   510-216-0872 You can schedule a consult by calling or digitally on his website. Talk to him before you hire anyone and see for yourself.

We recently used designer Cillesa Ullman (510)390-3176 www.cillesa.com for a kitchen remodel and a bath remodel in our Mediterranean-style house. She recommended a different contractor for each project, as they were not done at the same time and required different skills. Both were great to work with. She can draw up the design plans and is so helpful with coordinating everything. She narrowed down the choices of materials so that I did not have to run around finding things on my own. Remodeling requires lots of money, and it's well worth the cost of paying a designer so that you get a finished product you will be happy with for a long time. We are thrilled with our new kitchen and bathroom!

We used Franco Corvasce for our kitchen and my nieces bathroom. He's great! Our kitchen was old and funky. We took it down to the studs, took up the floor, added electrical to accommodate an induction cook top and raised the ceiling to it's original vaulted height. We have known Franco for many years and he's always been reliable and easy to work with. If you want I'd be happy to send you pictures. I think you can get in touch with me directly through the moderator.

Greetings and I have two recommendations for you both of whom I have used several times undertaking my own projects. For the tile work contact Jay at J and H Tile: 510-635-5526. For the vinyl flooring call John at Frick Flooring: 510-758-2122. Both men work by themselves, they are reliable and their work is excellent.

  • My house was built in 1910 and the kitchen has never been updated (other than the adding of electric and appliances).  I have lead paint on cabinets that don't shut and a barely functional place to prepare food. I am looking for recommendations for a contractor to update my kitchen and available to start this summer. I have a one year old who is starting to walk and I am eager to get those lead cabinets out of the house! Thanks in advance for your recs!

Contractors are busy right now because anyone stuck at home who has any disposable income is doing every project they can think of.

But. My best friend got together with a contractor from Wisconsin who's moved out here to be with her -- I was VERY reluctant to hire him because of the possible strain, if I wasn't satisfied, to my friend's and my relationship. He turned out to be aces. Older guy, can do ANYTHING, and has a monster work ethic -- can get stuff done f-a-s-t, and is a perfectionist, an appealing combo platter. He just redid cabinets and counter tops in my kitchen, as well as painting, tile -- you name it. He also has tasteful design ideas. I don't think his license is valid in CA, but for what you describe, you may be looking for a high end carpenter anyway. (And getting permits right now is a nightmare.) I recommend him because not that many people (other than, well, me) know about him yet! You are welcome to come over here and look at his work, if you like, appropriately distanced and masked, of course. His name is Mark Griffin, his number is (510) 612 0790, and you can tell him that Leslie said you could look at his work...

We had our bathroom and kitchen remodel done by Bay Area Pacific Construction, and from day 1, Emanuel and his team were incredible! Remodeling is not easy, but they were able to take the worry right out of the equation. They were honest and prompt with everything from beginning to end, every call, text or email was answered immediately. My wife is extremely detail oriented, and we could not be happier with the finished product. We highly recommend Bay Area Pacific Construction. Their phone number is 510 484 5765 and email admin [at] bayareapacificconstruction.com.

  • Hi, I’d like to remodel my kitchen and I’m looking for recommendations for a contractor who can do some nice finishing work such as countertops , cabinets,painting.,etc...

    Ideally not expensive.. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Kristen

    Hi kristen,

I would try calling a few local paint/building stores for recommendations. I work at East Bay Paint Center and we always have recommendations for painters and a few general contractors. Usually we also know who may have openings in the near future.

  • I am looking for a contractor to remodel my kitchen. I am looking for someone responsible, doing good quality work at affordable prices. Could you please help me with a recommendation?

Jeff Pratt just gutted and replaced a kitchen for us -- and the result is staggeringly beautiful and functional. He's a great guy, wonderful can-do attitude, competitively priced, and amazingly, HE FINISHED WHEN HE SAID HE WOULD!

    His number is 510 812 8086

Drop by Custom Kitchens at 6634 Telegraph. Wonderful designers, reliable, trustworthy. Really top notch--they are not cheap but you get what you pay for!  They've done my kitchen and bath in my 850sq ft workmans cottage and it is better than perfect.

Jeff Pratt just made a beautiful kitchen for us out of a near-unworkable space. If you want pictures, email me at Lesliebdixon [at] gmail.com. He is a delightful, honest person, reasonable, and meticulous.

    Don't know if he's available, but his number is 510 812 8086.
