Re: Ashtanga yoga class (July 2001)
I like the classes taught by Jonothon Gross at Berkeley Yoga Center and 4th Street Yoga. He has a nice, thoughtful and not overly macho way of putting together his classes. You can reach him at 510-524-9439. He teaches Vinyasa at Berkeley Yoga Center (1250 Addison Street) on Mondays and Wedenesdays, at 5;45, and Ashtanga on Fridays and Sundays at 6. the other option is the Monkey Yoga Shala in Oakland on LakeShore. It's kind of hipster scene there, but it's a great studio and the classes are challenging. I just don't think it's the best place to be introduced to yoga as they seem to assume you know the poses. Re: Yoga classes for gift (2001)
I've loved going to classes at the Berkeley Yoga Center on Addison at Bonar in Berkeley. I highly recommend Herdis Pelle's classes there. R Henke

I highly recommend the prenatal yoga classes at the Berkeley Yoga Center (843.8784 or Berkeleyyoga.com) for fitness during your pregnancy. It not only gives you the physical conditioning that is so important and desirable, but also the mental component so helpful in labor, with breath work, meditation, and conscious relaxation. I started yoga during my pregnancy, and now, three years later, am so grateful to have it in my life. I wholeheartedly recommend Cybele Tomlinson's beginning/intermediate yoga class on Monday nights from 7:15-8:30 at the Berkeley Yoga Center at Addison and Bonar, off University. The studio, a converted warehouse with brick walls and hardwood floors, is beautiful and peaceful. A bakery is on the ground floor, and the heavenly scent of baking bread wafts up through the floorboards as you're meditating at the beginning of the class and doing your yoga. It just adds to the general very special mood that the gifted teacher creates in her class. You don't have to know a thing about yoga... Or you could be quite experience: Cybele seems to accommodate all. Check it out. It's $40 for a 4 week series or $12 to drop in. Christy
