Community Reading Buddies

We are an Oakland-based nonprofit that trains high-school students to become 1-1 reading mentors for elementary students in the Bay Area community. The older students are given pre-planned lessons, skills, and supplemental reading options to work on with the younger students. The lessons and quality reading time help younger students develop a love of reading with the help of their new buddy. On average, elementary students see 4 months of growth in our 2 month program.

Notes

This summer, we are offering virtual and in-person options that take place throughout each weekday. Students are asked to join twice per week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) at the time they choose for 1 hour of reading support with their high-school mentor.
