What is it like to have an au pair?

Has anyone had an au pair and can shed some light on the experience? Pros and cons? Financial obligation? Thank you

I think it's relatively more common in Lamorinda or the Peninsula; maybe you should cross post your question to boards focused on those areas.

I haven't had one but I know a lot of families who have. It really depends on the person. The au pair typically stays for one year and then you get someone new. Some are great, some are not so great. They typically make friends with other au pairs and some want to party a lot. You'll need to set firm rules on the hours that they need to be available to work and the hours that they can go out with their friends. You can't make them work all the time and expect them to be at your beck and call at all times. Even though they're in your house, when it isn't working hours they're not working. That can be hard to navigate.
