Therapist for a newbie

I've never been to therapy before, but I'm realizing I really need it. Are there any current suggestions for a therapist treating anxiety and maybe depression for a middle-aged woman? I want someone whom I can relate to. It would be best if it could be online because of my schedule. Thank you in advance!

I am not currently in therapy but I saw Susan Sekler for years and highly recommend her. I know she will do phone appointments and possibly Zoom as well, I don’t like Zoom so I never inquired about it.

Hi there,

I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Here are a few tips for finding a therapist:

- It’s most important for you to have a trusting relationship with the therapist (research says this leads to the best outcome).

- Some therapists accept insurance, others provide a “superbill” that you send to your insurance company for reimbursement, and some are private pay only.

- Many therapists have profiles on Psychologytoday.com. It’s like a search engine for therapy and you can filter by location, issue (like anxiety or depression), insurance, etc. I like it because most of the time the profile is written directly by the therapist, so you get to hear more of their voice.

- There are many licenses out there. In CA, the most common tend to be LMFT, LCSW (licensed clinical social worker), PhD/PsyD (psychologists). They are all trained to provide therapy.

I highly recommend Dr Naomi Edelson. She’s an experienced psychologist and has a speciality in working with woman with anxiety. She’s also in midlife so could be rentable in that way. I’ve always found her to be approachable and funny but more importantly she’s warm and kind and very smart. She has an office in Rockridge but also see clients virtually. Her website is https://drnaomiedelson.com

Good luck!
