Public schools suitable for gifted learners?

Hello,

My family and I are planning to relocate to the East Bay from out of state next summer.  We will be coming out in the near future to take a look at neighborhoods.  Our top consideration in determining where to live is schools.  We’d like to find a place with solid schools from elementary through high school that could well serve gifted children.  Due to the cost of housing in the area, private schools will not be an option.

Our 9-year-old son will be entering 4th grade next fall.  He has tested as gifted and shows a propensity for social studies, writing, and drawing and also science, engineering, and computers.  He is fluent in English, Spanish and Mandarin and has had 4 years of elementary school French.  He is kind and empathetic, but not athletic and physically not a risk taker. He gravitates towards the more nerdy kids who like chess, Pokemon and computers.  He wouldn’t do well in a place where physical prowess is important or where bullying is accepted.  He would thrive in a school with strong humanities, math, science and art, with smaller classes or more individualized attention and with project-based or IB-type learning.  Language immersion would be a bonus.

Our 6-year-old daughter will be entering 2nd grade next fall. She has also tested as gifted and has been advanced a grade.  She shows a propensity for math and science. She is assertive and more comfortable taking physical risks.  She has the same language skills as our son (though she only has one year of elementary school French).   She would do well in a school with strong math and science and with opportunities for independent problem solving.

We also have a pre-schooler.  It’s too early to determine his learning profile but it is likely his needs will be similar to his siblings.

I’d appreciate suggestions of schools where you think learners with these profiles might thrive.  We’ve been looking at the Berkeley school district, the Yu Ming charter school in Oakland, Pleasanton, Fremont and Walnut Creek/Orinda/Lafayette.  I’m not as familiar with individual schools within each of these areas that may or may not be a good match.  I’d also appreciate suggestions of schools (public only) or areas we may have overlooked.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Within the East Bay, You may also want to look at the San Ramon Valley Unified school district, which has a fantastic ATP program, which pools the top 98th percentile among gifted learners.

Consider looking at Piedmont and Albany, too. Both have highly-rated public schools. I know Piedmont enables advanced math learning at a minimum.

From our experience, private schools will be your best option. We tried two highly rated and well funded public school districts to no avail. Our son is now in private school. The good news is that you will have more options in places to live since location won't depend on the local public schools. I wish I could give some recommendations but public schools are rarely able to handle gifted kids and don't have the flexibility to meet the needs of gifted kids.
