Peralta TK?

Hello,

We are considering enrolling our kiddo in the Peralta TK program next year at the Kaiser campus. (We are zoned for Peralta). We attended the parent info session which had little information on TK (was designed for rising kinder and the tk program is new this year)… could any current parents share insights into the following, which the info sessions couldn’t answer?

  • how many kids are in the Peralta TK program this year
  • ease of getting into the tk aftercare program (we understand TK has its own aftercare at the same campus?)
  • Teacher/student student ratio
  • any other insights that would be helpful

TK at the high demand schools tends to be full, so expect 24 kids, the maximum TK class size for 2024-25. The current staff-to-student ratio is 1:12, which in OUSD is one teacher with one aide. Hopefully some current Kaiser campus families can help with the aftercare details!

my kiddo is at Peralta TK this year, we love it! Yes the classes are larger (24 kids, 1 primary teacher & 1 assistant teacher) but the kids are well cared for and the school itself is small, principal seems to know every kid by name. The focus is on social/emotional development so there is a focus on sharing, jobs, and inclusive play. They work on math and reading through the inquiry based learning they do. After care is onsite and not difficult to get into. EBAC runs aftercare and the teachers are very sweet, the structure seems to be circle time, snack, craft, outside play, motor room play. Sometimes they do show movies (minimum week days) which I am not a big fan of, but small beans. I just heard that Peralta is having their own onsite TK next year (not at Kaiser?) so this info may be irrelevant?

It was just announced to the Peralta community that TK will be at the 63rd Street campus next year (24-25) school year. I think this is reflected in the ousd enrollment portal but not necessarily on the rest of the OUSD site. From what I understand, they are still working through a number of things that you have questions about (including aftercare) but I would recommend applying now and hopefully you’ll get the answers you need before you need to sign another pre-school contract (if that’s what you’re contemplating).
