Palatal expanders and airway orthodontics for 5 y.o.
I'm looking for recommendations for airway-focused orthodontists for my 5-year-old daughter. Palate expansion has been recommended as part of her treatment plan.
We've already had consultations with Dr. Ferrari (Kensington), who uses the Schwartz appliance, and Dr. Hockel (Walnut Creek), who works with the Crozat appliance. I'm currently seeking a third opinion and would really appreciate hearing from anyone with experience using these or other types of appliances.
Most importantly, I'm trying to understand the long-term effects and potential risks of these treatments. I'm also curious whether working with a cranial osteopath alongside orthodontic treatment is necessary or beneficial.
If you’ve been through this process with your child or have any insights to share, I’d be very grateful.

We had great success with the ALF appliance and Dr Mona Moy in Montclair. Both of our daughters did it from age 6-8 and are 18 and 17 and never needed braces.,.
We also did osteopathy.
Good luck!
My daughter had a tiny jaw and needed the palate expander. I don’t recall which type she had but we were very happy with Dr Ferrari and her team. I would trust her judgement! No issues with the palate expander except for a little soreness initially.
