Looking for Couples Counseling Specializing in Addiction

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a therapist that they have liked recently who sees couples and has experience with addiction, alcoholism, AA and Al Anon? My husband and I are going through a challenging time right now with recovery. We would really like to find better ways to communicate, identify some of the habits and dynamics that have evolved over the years that are not serving us anymore and try to repair.

Thanks.

I'm sorry you're going through this and wish for you the best of support. My situation is different, in that my now young-adult child struggles with addiction. My former spouse and I needed help communicating with each other and with our son (married through the thick of it, differences contributed to the divorce). But what I can share, is that I found it very challenging to find local therapeutic support that is more positive than punitive in approach, and that would support communication other than hardline 12-Step.

After much searching, I found more compassionate and skill building support through the Invitation to Change which is based in CRAFT. We the Village was founded by people whose partners struggled with addiction, provide a range of services, and is also based in CRAFT. If you're open to science-base, compassionate approaches that are shown to be effective, consider looking into them.
