looking for attorney specializing in Medi-Cal

Hi everyone -- Can anyone recommend a lawyer who is familiar with recent changes to Medi-Cal eligibility? My mother is in a nursing home and was able to qualify for Medi-Cal last year under AB470. But we believe she will lose her eligibility under new changes to Medi-Cal that go into effect in January 2026. We'd love to find an attorney who understands these upcoming changes and can help us preserve her eligibility status. Thanks in advance!

I suggest going to the CANHR website, AND calling them after reading the information there. They were a godsend for me when my mother went through this. They actually know what they are talking about, unlike almost every social worker I dealt with in the nursing homes and hospitals (most of whom dug in their heels and doubled down on their incorrect advice). When you call, they will answer your questions for free and then refer you to a pre-screened lawyer if you need one. Once you have accurate info, you may be able to advocate on your own. https://canhr.org

I’m sorry that what is already complicated is being further complicated. I can empathize. Hang in there.

I have also  used The lawyer referral service at California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.  (CANHR).  Don’t be confused by their name— they started with a goal of nursing home. We form but have expanded and have a Medi-Cal FAX sheet on their website. They also have a lawyer referral service where they refer families who are seeking an attorney who is knowledgeable in Medi-Cal law. They have done the vetting of those attorneys for you and know that Medi-Cal is the attorney specialty.
