How to pay housecleaner?

Due to a health issue, I need to hire someone to do housecleaning on a regular basis.  Have you used a housecleaner before and how do you pay?  By the hour?  By task?  Flat fee?  If you pay by the hour, do you specify the tasks to be completed within a certain time period?  Please advise.  Also, if you have someone good and trustworthy to recommend, it'd be sincerely appreciated.

Hi There, I highly recommend 'splurging' for a cleaner.  I have become dependent on the time it gives me for other things.  I have always paid per visit and I believe this is customary.  You can then negotiate what you want within the visit to be covered. For example, skip the laundry but do clean the fridge.  Our cleaners proposed to do certain tasks on a rotating basis - one visit they clean the fridge, the next they dust bookshelves and photos etc, and the next they clean the oven and then they start over.  We pay $175 per visit with 2 people spending about 3 hours in a 3 bedroom house. I have found that almost all cleaners want to start with a deep clean which is usually double time and double cost but totally worth it.

I have a 2 bedroom/1 bath home, and pay my cleaner a flat rate.

A potential Housecleaner will probably want to see your home and talk about frequency and types of tasks. Then they will provide a flat rate.
