Computer help

Dear BPN -- the archived recommendations are not "fresh" so I thought I would post to ask whether anyone has had some good/bad experiences with local (Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, etc.) providers of computer repair services.  I have a non-working external drive (not a power issue) and need to re-optimize a Mac that has a partition and Windows.  This is for home (not business) use and while I am a reasonably competent everyday computer user, I don't know the first thing about software or hardware repairs.  Any advice/recommendation would be very welcome.  Thank you!

Nerd Crossing and/or Geek Squad do all kinds of repairs. I've been pretty happy with the Geeks as they do lots of the work (but not all) remotely, however I don't have a Mac and don't want to assume.

Becky Waring (becky [at] waring.org) is a one-woman wonder when it comes to Macs.  I highly recommend her work.  She's smart, thorough and very cost-conscious.  She's also very responsive to email queries and will patiently walk you through almost anything.

I used this computer guy called Kyle Leinen who works in Alameda and Marin, and makes house calls. Best computer guy EVER. Fixed our dead hard drive, repaired our home network, and is super nice and reliable. (510) 299-0243

I have used Max Weinryb for years, for large issues and small, individual machines and networks. He's skilled with PCs and Macs, has reasonable rates, and in most cases charges only if he solves your problem. Max Weinryb, 510 848 8996
