Alaska trip to see northern lights?

We're thinking about taking a family trip to Alaska in November or December to try to catch the aurora borealis.  Can you recommend places to stay (probably near Fairbanks) and things to do at that time of year when we're not sky-peeping?  I want to make sure we have fun even if the lights don't make an appearance. Did you rent clothing/outdoor gear, or how did you keep warm enough? Any other recommendations/tips? Thanks!

You may want to check out Salmon Berry Tours. They do lots of different tours in Alaska that might interest you. Not sure how much is focused on Northern Lights or in Fairbanks but it might provide other things for you to do on the trip. I think they may also rent clothing/gear so you don't have to buy before your trip.

I know a group that went to Alaska last winter to see the Aurora and in addition did the Matanuska Glacier Walk, dog sledding and the train ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Flying into Anchorage and out of Fairbanks may provide a way for you to see more  on the trip.
