Questions about Sylvia Mendez

Our daughter will be entering 2nd grade next year and we’re thinking about transferring her to Sylvia Mendez (she speaks Spanish). If you are familiar with the school, we’d love to hear about your experience there. Thanks!

RE:

We haven't been at Sylvia Mendez long (kid in kinder), but we've been really happy there so far. There's a big commitment to building community (coffee twice a month for families at drop off, many family groups and advisory opportunities, many family welcoming events) and recognizing diversity (assemblies on different types of diversity every Friday) and integrating multicultural celebration (Kwanzaa, Día de los Muertos, etc.). Teachers seem passionate, new principal is great, curriculum (from what I've seen) also seems good. The physical space, including playground are pretty old, in fact, you should be aware that major construction starts summer 2024 and the entire school will be in portables on the blacktop for at least a year with an additional year of major construction of a new building (while the kids are back in the adjoining old building). It's going to be a very chaotic time for the school, but that said, it's a good community to ride through chaos with.
