I provide in-depth reading and math assessments along with dyslexia screening and cognitive abilities screening in order to help families understand why their student is struggling in class, what skills and understandings they need to help them catch up, and the best approaches for how their, individual child learns. I am useful to families that need uderstanding and direction for their struggling learner, but do not require or cannot afford a neuro-psychological assessment.

Rick was an excellent resource for us and I highly recommend working with him. We worked with Rick Mason to have our rising 11th grade daughter assessed for dyslexia. She has experienced increasing struggles with all subjects, but especially reading and writing as her schooling has progressed; however, due to her relative strengths was never flagged by her school settings as a child who needed further support or evaluation. (We have requested a 504 and IEP assessment, but that is a story for another day.) She requested additional help herself, and as parents we struggled with how to best support her as neuropsych assessments felt cost prohibitive and time intensive due to long waitlists. Rick offered clear frameworks and transparency for his services. When I initially approached him regarding his services; he was clear that a lot of information could be provided by the FAR assessments, and that if needed he could provide additional testing - he did not waste our time. This was really helpful since it felt like we were late to the party in terms of gathering this information. Rick was thorough in his initial evaluation and history gathering.  He quickly identified our daughter’s strengths and challenges, and  provided us with valuable information, insights, and thoughtful recommendations. He was able to offer precise information and capture nuance that helps us to better understand her specific learning needs. The recommendations he suggested feel concrete, actionable and accessible especially as her schedule this year is demanding. Thanks to Rick's support it feels like we are on the path to better support and progress.

I had the pleasure of working with Rick as a learning specialist for my three children, and I cannot speak highly enough of his dedication and expertise. From the very beginning, Rick demonstrated genuine care for their emotional well-being, always prioritizing their self-esteem and confidence alongside their academic progress.

Thanks to his guidance, all three of my children, who finished high school with A averages, are now attending excellent colleges. Rick took the time to understand each child's unique needs and tailored his approach accordingly. He provided thoughtful, constructive feedback and regularly measured their success, which helped us see tangible progress and stay motivated.

His holistic approach truly made a positive difference in their growth, both academically and emotionally. Overall, Rick was excellent—professional, compassionate, and incredibly effective. I highly recommend him to any family seeking a caring and skilled learning specialist.

We’re very grateful for the support our son received working with Rick. Rick provided assessments at multiple points from 4th grade to 8th grade to track progress and find areas that continued to need work. One of the most important things Rick provided was a clear understanding of how our son learns—his strengths, his challenges, and what kind of support he needs. Our son has ADHD and dyslexia, and Rick was able to home in on the complex form of dyslexia he has. Through thoughtful assessment and observation, Rick helped us better understand our son’s learning profile, especially in reading, writing, spelling, and cognitive processing.

Rick has a lot of experience working with twice-exceptional students, and it showed. He was able to explain complex learning issues in a way that made sense and helped us take practical next steps. He gave us a much clearer and more complete picture of our son’s diagnosis and how it affects his learning day to day. Our son has ADHD and dyslexia, and Rick was able to home in on the complex form of dyslexia he has.  His insights gave us direction we hadn’t gotten from school or pediatric evaluations.

He also developed a great working relationship with our son. He was warm and genuinely interested, without being overly casual or indulgent. He knew how to keep things on track while still making our son feel respected and engaged.

If you’re looking for someone who can provide meaningful assessment and guidance, we strongly recommend Rick. He had a huge positive impact on our son and our family.

Rick Mason has been working with my son since the summer. He is a Reading Specialist and Educational Therapist with decades of experience teaching students who learn differently and supporting parents to find the best resources for their child.   He uses phonics-based, multi-sensory instruction to help younger students overcome dyslexia or other impediments to reading success; develops both math concepts and skills for students who lack a natural sense of number or who struggle with math due to anxiety, or simply not having mastered foundational math skills in the early grades.

Rick has used a variety of approaches with my kid to develop spelling ability along with overall writing and reading comprehension skills.  Underpinning his instruction is his understanding of how the individual child learns so that he teaches the child rather than the curriculum.  This includes helping students understand and appreciate their strengths and challenges as learners,  and learn how to use their strengths to support their weaker learning abilities, or to overcome deficit areas.  Rick works with patience and humor to forge a positive relationship with students and to make lessons enjoyable.
