Carmen's Family Childcare
Oakland, CA
My son has gone to Carmen’s since he was 7.5 months old and is turning two soon. We recently moved farther away from Carmen’s and, because of changing work commutes, will have to transition him in a couple of months, which breaks our hearts. Tia and Nina (the nicknames used by the caregivers, who are both named Carmen) are extraordinarily loving, warm, experienced childcare providers who genuinely treat each child as if they were their own kin — and many of the children in their families have come through the daycare as well! They have been providing care to children as a duo for several decades and approach their roles with love, enthusiasm, and bounding energy. The kids are fed two snacks and a meal each day, play outside a ton, take good naps, and engage in developmentally appropriate, fun, pressure-free learning through songs and play. My son came home singing a dozen songs, dancing, counting, and identifying colors, which provided a wonderful foundation for us to encourage him to keep learning and discovering.
The environment that Tia and Nina create is loving, warm, cozy, contained, and safe, while focusing on being a joyful and fun place for the kids to go every day. They are really responsive to parents’ requests to help with basic health-related needs like tending to diaper rashes or administering simple medications, and while our child doesn’t have allergies, I know they are fastidious about allergies when kids have them. They are very responsive by text message and will always answer our questions right away, though most days at pickup our feedback was that our son had “a beautiful day.” They are also very communicative and straightforward about vacation schedules and daycare closures, as well as how to navigate sicknesses. In fact, on the occasions when we had to pick our child up early with a fever or sickness, we often got text messages in the evening asking how he was doing and expressing their care.
I really cannot say enough about the gratitude that we feel to Tia and Nina. Knowing that your child is in the hands of people who truly love them and care about their health and happiness is a huge relief for working parents. With no local family to help raise our son, we have felt that Tia and Nina are our “village” and that we can rely on them to show up for us and for him. We feel that we found the best possible early childcare for our son, and will miss them terribly!
Both of my kids went here. They are amazing caregivers and we’ve been grateful for the wonderful care they’ve provided our children.
A wonderful play-based family daycare. We've been going here since my son was 6months (now 1.5YO) and he's always thrilled to see Tia, Nina, and all his friends at the door in the morning. Our updates on the happenings each day are pretty brief (this isn't a type of place that logs all diapers and food in an app) but we're always given the important lowdown, or texted when anything is out of the usual. The kids get two snacks and lunch each day provided by Tia and Nina, and get plenty of backyard play time.
We can see the love Tia and Nina have for each of these kids and we're so happy to have found this daycare!
My daughter went to Carmen's Family Daycare at 1957 E 38th street in the Dimond. We were very happy with the providers who are both named Carmen (although they went by Tia and Nina).
We highly recommend Tia and Nina, they have been in business for 20+years. They genuinely love children, their job and know their business. They made the transition very smooth for him and patient with us- parents. My son lights up when I tell him we are going to Carmen’s, they are play based, home made delicious food; he has learned how to be kind, share, take turns, table manners, games and songs, and specially he has lots of fun.
They are great listeners and have provided great support, flexibility and guidance.
Our son has been there for 9 months there and continues to thrive. We highly recommend them.
I'm not sure if it is similar to your old daycare in SF, but we have been so happy with Carmen's Family Day Care in Glenview. My oldest child is moving onto preschool this week, as are several others, and I think they may have some space for toddlers.
This is an excellent daycare! My son loves it here. He started at 12 weeks and is now over a year old. Both women who run the daycare are loving and great with the kids. They create a warm environment for the kids to interact and grow while setting appropriate boundaries and having fun. I see the benefits of a positive daycare environment in my son's attitude and behavior constantly. I feel very lucky to have found this daycare.
My son has been going to Carmen's Family Daycare since he was 4 months old. We're currently expecting our second child and will definitely continue to use Carmen's for our daycare needs. It's a warm and loving environment and my son is so comfortable with both of the women that run it. It's been a real comfort for me to know that he is safe and happy when I'm not able to be with him.
I called the number today and a young man answered the phone. When I asked to speak to Carmen, he hung up on me. Called again and no answer. Not sure this daycare is still operating. We've been looking for information on Carmen's Family Daycare in Oakland's Glenview, but haven't been able to find much. We'd love to hear from families that have experience there--good or bad. Thanks!
I've put 2 kids at Carmen's Family Day Care and really appreciated them. They are run by two licensed day care providers named, Carmen who are loving, warm and also good with setting appropriate limits. They give lots of hugs. Both of my kids think fondly of them. They were great at helping my infant daughter transition. It was tough on both ends but they were determined to help her adjust. Now she is just so attached to them and thinks of them on the weekends. They care about the kids and ask about them even when they move on to preschool. They also have raised appropriate concerns about my son's development which I really appreciated being a new mother at that time. I just felt they were another pair of eyes who looked after my children and helped me raise them. They read to them everyday and encourage you to share a book for them to read during the day. If there were any drawbacks for some parents, it is that they do let the children watch TV on rainy days. I really can't say enough about how much I and my children will miss them when my last child will leave. Lisa

Carmen's Family Daycare, in the lower Glenview area of Oakland, has openings for a few lucky babies or toddlers. This is a loving home-based daycare run by two women named Carmen. They are exceptionally loving, conscientious, and trustworthy. My daughter is there now, as was my son before her. A bunch of kids went to preschool in September, so they have room to spare. Hours are 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. They can be reached at 530-3276. Please contact me if you would like more information. Laura
