Math with Mr. Cottone: Accepting math students for the 2025-2026 school year!

I am a veteran math teacher with 17 years of classroom teaching and tutoring experience. I hold a BA (with Honors) in Math from UC Berkeley, an MAT in Mathematics Education, and National Board Certification. I have been a teacher at charter, private, independent, and international schools. I taught math at the College Preparatory School in Oakland for 7 years and was also chair of the math department there. Since 2020 I have been the owner of a math tutoring business, Math with Mr. Cottone, where I work one-on-one or in small groups with students in a virtual setting on Zoom. My core tutoring hours are 1:00pm-9:30pm Sunday-Thursday. I do my best to accommodate the schedules of my students.

I use my iPad Pro in addition to other online resources to create an engaging, collaborative, and supportive learning environment that empowers students to excel in math. While most of my students are in high school, I also work with students in middle school and college. I meet with students as needed and on a regular basis, providing support with homework; supplemental instruction, review, and practice; collaborative problem-solving; and test preparation. I also work with students who are preparing for standardized exams like the PSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE, CBEST, AP Pre Calculus, AP Calculus, and possibly other exams. 

I tailor my lessons to the needs and curriculum of each student. In addition to traditional textbook coursework, I have experience working with student-centered, integrated, problem-based curricula. I help students develop a deep understanding of the concepts; we work together to develop problem-solving skills along with a growth mindset.
