Inspire Behavioral Learning, LLC has a school year employment opening for a Nature Camp Counselor in Call of the Wild Camps, outdoor nature camps in the Bay Area! Inspire's outdoor educators use emergent curriculum & experiential learning to open a wondrous door to the great outdoors as our living classroom. Join us in leading the next generation of environmental stewards.
Responsibilities: Nature Camp Counselors teach & lead children in grades K-5, ages 5-10, in outdoor day camps. Inspire's educators create a safe & fun learning environment with hands-on nature exploration, hikes, nature walks, nature connection, biology activities, environmental education, leave no trace activities, animal rights activities, storytimes, nature journaling, nature-inspired arts & crafts, creative play, & more! Nature Camp Counselors actively teach and engage children in nature education and outdoor recreation. Employees also provide mentorship and support for CITs. This is not a babysitter job or a yard duty job.
Qualifications:
- You are an adult (age 18+)
- High school diploma
- The #1 quality in all of Inspire's employees is a passion for both teaching & learning, for the best educators are the best learners
- At least 1 yr experience teaching in K-5 level camps or equivalent experience
- Regular experience hiking or running trails on varied terrain at least approx. 6 mi./day
- Already possess unexpired CPR & First Aid certification
- Already possess your own reliable vehicle & auto insurance
- Demonstrate a fun & engaging teaching style with high energy, creativity, adaptability, spontaneity, dynamism, & positivity
- Eco-conscious skills with a demonstrable love of nature & the outdoors, life sciences, biology, environmental science, outdoor education, or environmental education
- Health-conscious skills with a demonstrable love of active & healthy living
- Enthusiasm for making education relevant to children's lives
- You can articulate how veganism benefits animals, health, & the environment
- You are vegan as an ethical philosophy & lifestyle advocating for cruelty-free, positive alternatives to unnecessary animal exploitation for food, clothing, recreation, entertainment, household products, & the environment
Camps with employment openings:
- Saturdays camps: second Saturdays of the month Oct-May in East Bay parks & science museums - Lake Chabot, Shorebird Park, Roberts Regional Park, Joaquin Miller Park, Chabot Space and Science Center, The Lawrence Hall of Science, Tilden Park, Dimond Park, UC Botanical Garden, & Lake Merritt
- Fall break camp: Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, Oakland
Employee schedule:
- Training: before camps start
- Saturday camps: Oct 11, Nov 8, Dec 13, Jan 10, Feb 14, Mar 14, Apr 11 & May 9. 8:55 AM-5:05 PM with breaks included
- Fall break camp: Nov 24-26 (three days). 8:25 AM-4:35 PM with breaks included
Compensation: $20-22/hr DOE
Classification: Non-exempt employee, seasonal, temporary. Successful hires may be invited to return for future seasons (camps are held in summer, fall, winter, & spring!).
