Photographer for a Party

  • As we all gear up for the holidays, I find myself seeking the valuable advice and recommendations of the BPN community.

This year, I aim to capture the genuine joy and warmth of the holidays with some photographs. I am hosting a low-key potluck-style celebration comprising 15 of our nearest and dearest family members. Rather than exchanging traditional gifts, I thought having a photographer join us for a half-hour to 45 minutes would be wonderful to capture candid moments of the grandparents and grandkids together in play. I will be too busy hosting and wrangling kids to do this myself, and I thought giving everyone some fun photos would be a great alternative to gifting more objects. We are likely getting together on the morning of December 23rd or 24th, not Christmas Day.

I envision a casual, unstructured approach to the photos, allowing our guests to immerse themselves in the festivities fully. Unfortunately, my search for a photographer specializing in candid work has yielded quotes well beyond my budget, with estimates starting at $850. The photos don't need to be magazine quality; I would certainly be happy to work with someone who enjoys photography as a hobby. I aim to find someone with the skill to seize a few cherished moments while remaining unobtrusive as we enjoy our holiday festivities.

Thank you for any suggestions or advice you might have.

I hired a high schooler to take photos of my daughter's 5th birthday party some years ago, and they were affordable and the photos turned out just fine. Better than I could have done even if I'd had a spare hand! You don't say where you are located, but I know both ECHS and Albany High have photography classes or clubs. No doubt more high schools do as well. I would suspect $200 would be more than adequate for 3 hours and 50 final photos to own.

Celia Catalino. I've actually seen shoots she's done that are exactly what you are describing! I'm not sure what she charges for this sort of thing (I've only used her for family portraits) but no harm inquiring. She is busy so hopefully she's available when you need her. http://www.celiacatalino.com

I'd check out Maurice Seaty (PhotographyXMaurice (smugmug.com)). He does exactly what you're looking for and it's a hobby he does on the side, so I don't think he charges professional fees. He shot our wedding awhile back and we loved how the photos turned out. I think his contact info is on his website but you can also email him at maurice.seaty [at] gmail.com
