Advice about Using a Tutor

  • For the 2024-25 school year (and possibly beyond), we are thinking of hiring our son's former Spanish teacher to tutor him so that he keeps the language going. She is open to the idea but we haven't talked about any details yet, and I want to be sure we do this right. For others who have hired a language tutor recently: (1) how much do you pay them?; (2) how often do you think they need to work with your child in order to make meaningful progress in the language?; (3) anything else we should be mindful of? Our child is almost 11 and has attended a Spanish immersion school most of his life, but will be switching to a non-immersion school next year. His teacher will still be teaching next year so I assume we'll need to plan on some weekend-only tutoring.

This is all new territory for us, so we appreciate any advice. Thanks!

  • Rates for Tutors?

    Mar 3, 2022

Hello, can anyone suggest the going rate for a reading tutor? 1 on 1 Hourly rate suggestion. This is for a 1st grade student, emerging reader?

    Thank you for any ideas/suggestions.

    Sarah

I have seen a range $50-$100. Our tutor charges $90 but she has a master’s degree and is a former credentialed elementary school teacher who teaches bilingual curriculum.

My son, now in 10th grade, started seeing his excellent tutor (all subjects) in 7th grade for $70/hr. I raised it last year to $75/hr. He used to come to our home but since the pandemic it’s all been online with zoom. A tutoring service/company we contacted initially was $110/hr., onsite at their office.

We have a tutor for our 11yr old 1 on 1 and pay $100/hr.  PM me if you want her contact info. She is a BUSD teacher and my daugher LOVES her (so do I!).
