Seamstress to replace a zipper
Hi,
I saw a few recommendations for similar things, but they were all from many years ago. We need to get a zipper replaced on a “puffer” jacket, and are looking for a seamstress or tailor who can do such work at a reasonable price (from what I remember from my sewing days, it’s fairly straightforward?) Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who can replace a zipper in a jacket? (Or someone you’d avoid for whatever reason, to look out for) Thanks.

I had a zipper in a beloved down jacket replaced by Polly at Stitches in Alameda. I don’t think it was a complicated job, but it came out perfect, including the color match (sort of a sage green). She did say that I was lucky because the jacket is constructed in such a way that she could remove the zipper, but most puffers are not, so depending on the design you may be out of luck. I think any reasonably good tailor could tell you wether it’s doable.
I really like Piedmont Alterations. She is a one woman shop and has been there forever. Very pleasant, timely, fair price and good.
I take jobs like this to my local dry cleaners. I think most dry cleaners have a tailor they work with or can do it onsite. They'll be able to give you an estimate - sometimes things like this are very labor intensive and cost more than you think.
