Seeking small-group aftercare options for TKer near Oakland Hills

Hello Community,

My daughter will be eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) at OUSD next fall. She is shy, and large, mixed-age groups (especially noisy, chaotic ones) are difficult for her. She gets easily overwhelmed or stressed in those settings.

Currently, my son attends Montclair Elementary, and after school he goes to the BACR on-campus aftercare program. The school has 500+ kids, spanning TK–5th grade. I worry my daughter (as a still-young TKer) will have a very hard time adjusting to such a large and mixed-age aftercare environment.

I am looking for alternative arrangements that might be better suited for a sensitive, younger child in the Oakland Hills area. Specifically:

  • A smaller program with a higher caregiver-to-child ratio
  • A narrower age range (e.g., TK-only or TK + K)
  • A calmer, quieter environment

Has anyone found an afterschool arrangement that has worked well with a TKer—especially if your child prefers calmer, more contained settings? I would love to be able to afford to hire a dedicated caregiver to pick her up at school and play with her until 5-5:30 pm, but that is cost-prohibitive for our family. I work in SF, so I would need a program that can pick her up at Montclair Elementary.

I’d especially love recommendations for:

  • Smaller-scale aftercare programs in the Oakland Hills?
  • Do nanny-shares exist just for after-school care?
  • What about home-based providers that can accommodate this situation?

Anything else that has been helpful for your shy or sensitive little one making the transition from a small preschool setting to a much larger public school? Open to all suggestions. Thank you so much in advance!
