21st Century Parenting Speaker Series - Othering, Belonging, and Considering Our Impact with Christopher James

In this session, we will discuss the concepts of othering and belonging, and how these concepts play pivotal roles in the ways that we all see ourselves, each other, and the world around us. More specifically, how do our language choices, treatment of each other, and our understanding of the complex histories of our communities shape each other’s experiences and potentially impact how people relate to each other?

Over the course of this session, we will explore how to better humanize and empathize with each other’s experiences, some historical context, and how to talk about current events or address offensive language/terms with your student. We will also discuss some strategies for advocating for one’s self or others when instances of othering occur.

We welcome all parents and members of the community to attend this session, with the hopes that we all emerge from it more empowered to foster a community of young people who remain inclusive of others, value each other regardless of differences, and build a more harmonious future together.

Christopher James is a member of the Social Justice and Well-being team at the W. Haywood Burns Institute, working to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in justice systems nationwide. A Tulane Law School graduate, he brings experience in youth advocacy, legal defense, and community program development, with a focus on using innovations in youth justice to drive broader systems transformation.
