Home insurance for homes over 100 years old
The home insurance on my mother's home was not renewed after her passing. Allstate, her insurer for over 30 years, no longer offers new policies in California. We contacted insurance agents and made direct calls to insurers and only one out of state insurance brokerage would insure the home because it is 130 years old. The coverage is renegotiated yearly and the uncertainty combined with the yearly price increase is nerve wracking. How are homeowners who are looking for new policies on old homes securing coverage? Is an expensive California fair plan with less coverage the only alternative?

Hmm, I think you can only get the FAIR plan if nobody else will insure it. So if you have insurance, you're not eligible for the FAIR plan.
We have the FAIR plan now on a new to us home, and a) it's not expensive, and b) you buy supplemental coverage too. Also not that expensive.
However, until this spring, we had coverage on a different house through GEICO which was still insuring in CA, so you might want to give them a call if you haven't yet.
