Moving to Berkeley – Seeking Insights on Local Public Schools
Hi Berkeley community,
My family and I are moving to Berkeley this summer, and I’m reaching out with so much excitement—and a sincere desire to connect and learn from you.
We’re a multiracial family (Korean, Filipino, white) with a soon-to-be 5-year-old starting TK this fall, and we’re looking for a school community that reflects and reinforces the values we hold dear: diversity, anti-racism, equity, and whole-child development. We want our child to be seen—in identity, in learning style, in joy—and nurtured in a setting where curiosity and justice grow side by side. She has been attending a Montessori school in Austin since she was a toddler.
If your child currently attends or has attended any of the Berkeley public elementary schools or Montessori schools, I’d be so grateful to hear your reflections. Specifically:
- How would you describe the culture and community at the school?
- Do teachers stay? Are they consistent, invested, and supported?
- How has your child been supported—and challenged—academically and emotionally?
- How do the schools live out (or struggle with) equity and inclusion in practice?
- Anything else you wish you’d known when enrolling?
We’re looking not just for information, but connection—with other families who care deeply about cultivating learning spaces where all children can thrive.
Thank you in advance for sharing your experience. We can’t wait to join this community!
Warmly,
Daisy (soon-to-be Berkeley neighbor + TK parent)
