Quinceanera Planning for Adopted Mexican Girl
My husband and I are white and we have an adopted a girl who is Mexican. She is now nearing her 15th birthday in December and we'd all like to celebrate this event in the traditional Mexican way - the quinceanera - but don't know where to start. Has anyone navigated this situation before and if so, can you provide guidance? Our daughter does not have a ton of friends so it would be mostly family, but given her birthday is in December (mine too, it sucks!), both finding a space and availability of guests is daunting. A mariachi band? Catered food? Seems like it shouldn't be complicated but it's feeling that way. TYIA.

Hi there! I was heartened to see this post. Thank you for being so mindful of creating a memorable quincenera for your daughter! I am first generation Mexican-American; I did not have a quincenera myself, but have attend countless ones, mostly in Southern California. I can recommend a mariachi band in the local area and I must say, my Mexican parents approve, even my dad whose uncle and late father played in a mariachi band: https://www.mariachisancarlos.com/en/aboutus/. We've seen them multiple times at Del Cielo brewery in Martinez.
You could also try to see if these food trucks cater at events. If you want to include Mexican food via a fun food truck, we love the quesabirria tacos from: La Santa Torta, El Garage, and La Kura (just an idea!). I wish you all a beautiful celebration!
Hello,
I have some experience with this and would be happy to chat more about what we did. We basically went about it being very aware that we are not going to do it perfectly and just kept the parts of the tradition that our daughter loved most and skipped out on all the rest (like the mariachi band). Message me through BPN to connect.
