International travel w/ a gender expansive child

Looking for insights wrt border control (both leaving and coming in). Did you feel safe? What (extra?) precautions did you take? TIA.

I've traveled with my 8 yo trans child (and her younger cis sibling) to both Mexico (February 2025) and Canada (April 2025) via flights. My trans child has a masc leaning name, but her gender marker on her passport is updated to match her appearance & gender. There were zero issues, zero questions coming or going. Hope this is helpful – I know under the current administration it’s gotten very scary very quickly. It could be useful to post this question to the RainbowFamilies google group to get more information.

As a parent of a slightly older trans child (teen) who has had a legal name and gender change we are not traveling out of the country. We tried to update our child’s passport with all the correct documentation and while names will be updated if changed, gender markers will not be updated under this administration, even if changed by court order. If you have a passport that aligns with your name and gender, I think it is a very different situation. I do not feel safe taking my child through passport control at this time. It feels sad and scary.
