May 16, 2025Car accident and safety of car & carseat
–Jan 15, 2018I'm in my third trimester of pregnancy and was the not-at-fault party in an accident recently. The damage was extensive enough that the car had to be towed away after the accident. Our car was a Prius we bought new barely over a year ago and had less than 10,000 miles on it. I'm already getting the sense that our insurance company is going to try to settle this quickly with the other party, and I don't have full confidence we will come out of this on par with what we had moments before the accident, not to mention the hassel and anxiety of going through the ordeal. Given that no one wants to buy cars that were previously in accidents, how do I know it will be as safe as possible to drive my children in, even once it's repaired? The insurance company doesn't want to replace the car seat because it was unoccupied (thankfully!!) at the time of the crash, unless there's "damage". How do I assess that? I'm not completely risk averse, but my children's safety is not something I'm willing to gamble a penny on. I love our car, I'm not a litigious person, and the other driver seemed like a perfectly decent human being, but I don't want to end up way behind because of something that was not my fault. I'd love to hear any advice from anyone who has gone through anything similar!

I did this at the CA state patrol offices on Telegraph in North Oakland. It was reassuring, and I'm glad I took the few minutes to do it, but I'll also note that I had the sense that I knew more about the details of car seat installation safety from watching tutorials than the officer who was doing the check.
We did ours at the Berkeley police station down near the Berkeley marina, near skates on the bay. Was easy to make an appointment and have them check everything out
You can go to any fire station to get it looked at. I went to the Albany station and they helped.
If you are a member of AAA, they can do it too. We did it at the AAA office in Rockridge; the gentleman who helped us was knowledgable and helped us install the seats a little tighter.
Hi-- CA AAA has an office in the Rockridge Shopping center (in Oakland) that has a specific car seat installation/check person. I use it when my grandkids are coming to visit so I know their car seats are in correctly. You can schedule an appt. with them.
Hello parents, I did my car seat inspection at this location, it was an easy process.
