  • Looking for a barber/salon with the patience to cut hair for 10+ boy with ADHD and autism? Most recommendations are for much younger kids and I was able to do it for a while at home because the barber got frustrated and impatient because it's hard for him to sit still. He didn't like kid salons as he got older because "they're for babies." He's really sensitive around his neck so it's extremely challenging.

Oakland/Berkeley preferred, but anywhere in the East Bay works because of desperation.

We love our Barber Jaye. She has cut the hair of my son, who's on the spectrum, since his very first haircut. She is gentle, understanding, and patient, and just wonderful to be around. These days, she only works on Tuesdays at the Chic salon, located at 1622 Shattuck. Her phone number is 510-672-4426.

wanted to add: my kid is 17 now, and still goes there. The salon is a salon for adults, and your kid will be treated with respect, and not like a little kid.

Thanks for recommendation. I ended up going to Eclipxe Hair Salon and Laura worked on my son. Maybe the stars were aligned (I asked for someone really patient with kids, told her his neck was really sensitive, and went when there was only 1 other client in the salon) because she successfully cut my son's hair with minimal drama. We didn't have any pictures so she looked some up and my son picked the style, then she checked in with him throughout the cut to see if he liked the length. Afterward he said, "mom, you should have her cut your hair--it's getting really long!"
