Crestmont School is a hidden gem tucked away in the hills of Richmond. Founded in 1969 on the core principles of strong academics, social justice, and experiential learning, Crestmont has since expanded into an innovative TK-8 program while staying true to its progressive, down-to-earth roots.

Today, Crestmont is the oldest cooperative TK-8 school on the West Coast, and our transformative approach to education has some serious staying power. Crestmont families love our small class sizes, individualized attention, and rigorous academics, offered in a supportive setting that fosters inclusion, creativity, and freedom of expression.

What sets our community of learners apart?

🙌

Academic Excellence for Every Student

We define rigor as work that challenges students in new and interesting ways. Our curriculum is engaging, stretches thinking, and cultivates a love of deep knowledge. Our philosophy focuses on being responsive to each child’s interests to create meaningful learning experiences, with a balance between well-planned strategic lessons and those that are adaptable and driven by curiosity.

👐

A Safe Space for Learning

A safe, supportive, and inclusive community allows students to thrive academically and socially. Helping students acquire social-emotional skills is a fundamental part of primary education and a cornerstone of Crestmont’s philosophy. This helps children to experience a sense of belonging. It is also critical for developing a safe and trusting community, which is essential for learning.

✌️

Raising Good Citizens

Learning and working at a co-operative school lets students hone the skills they will need to participate as responsible citizens in a democracy. Students, families, and teachers all have something to offer to support the common good of the school, and model for each other how to collaborate, how to resolve differences of opinion, how to make their voices head, and how to engage in respectful debate. Crestmont kids see what it looks like to "do the work", and get to experience the feeling of doing that work together toward a shared goal.

Crestmont students go on to attend high schools large and small, colleges and universities traditional and alternative, and graduate into a thrillingly diverse range of professions and projects. Our oldest alumni are just now reaching their 60s. Whether they graduated in 1969 or last June, they each carry with them the deeply rooted sense of self, the open-minded approach to others, and the life-long love of learning that a Crestmont education cultivates.
