Re: Job Corps as alternative to high school for 16-year-old? (July 2004)
This is in response to Tunisha's inquiry about the job corps. There is a new charter high school in Oakland called Oasis, that is opening in the Fall. It is specifically for kids who have dropped-out of high school and has a variety of interesting options for teens who want to give it another try in a unique setting. It will be in the new Fruitvale Center - right next to the Fruitvale BART station, therefore very accessible transportation.

Their philosophy is, ''We know that a dropout is an unconventional person who chooses an unconventional way of life. Oasis High School and it's students are hope for education and for tomorrow. ''

It sounds like an interesting option for some of the teens we know and work with. I attended an orientation and was very impressed.

They are having information nights at Laney College on July 20th & 27th and August 3rd & 10th. The link for more information and applications for the school is: http://www.oaklandoasis.org/
