  • Hello. My two year old daughter has been attending a small home day care since she was 5 months old. I am now looking into preschools, and I have found one next to my job that I liked. However, I am having trouble finding recent reviews for Little Sprouts preschool in the Fruitvale, Oakland. What have your experiences been like? Positive? Negative? Is it just play based, or do you feel like your child is learning enough to be ready for kindergarten?

My daughter attended LSP for 2 years. It was near my home, affordable, and I knew some people from the church it is associated with. Overall we had a good experience there. It’s fairly small and the teachers were very loving to the kids. I’d say it’s a mix of play-based and more academic focus. I think it’s more traditional and no-frills than a lot of the preschools you’ll read about on BPN. But I felt like my daughter was well prepared for kindergarten. Now my daughter looks back very fondly on her time there and she really loved her teachers. I’d be happy to talk with you about it.

I'd like to hear people's experiences with Little Sprouts Preschool in Fruitvale in Oakland. I'm especially interested in hearing about the Christian aspects. I used to be more religious, but now I'm more of an agnostic. I'd like to know how heavy of an emphasis it is. They gave the impression that it was mostly stories and songs, not asking kids to pray, but I'd like to know what other parents' experiences were. Thanks. anon

The staff at Little Sprouts are all incredibly loving, both to the children and to the families, and I believe that stems from their Christian faith. They are welcoming and accepting of families of all backgrounds including ethnic and religious. Since it is a ''Christian'' school with Christian teachers and part of a church, the Christian faith will be intertwined in much of the kids' days. Yes, they do Bible songs and stories, they also pray or have a prayer song all together before mealtimes, have a verse on the wall, and may do an occasional art project with a biblical theme to name a few. Nothing is ever forced, it is all part of the flow of the day, weaved in very naturally and lovingly. If this turns you off, then Little Sprouts is probably not for you. But if you are open to it, I assure you that you child will be well loved and cared for and instantly accepted into their ''family''. I think you will feel it too as a parent. At age 2 when my daughter started going to Little Sprouts she was extremely shy and anxious. This month she entered kindergarten with tremendous social confidence, much of which I credit to the loving environment of Little Sprouts.

My son, age 3, is currently a student at Little Sprouts. He feels really safe in a place where the teachers are very loving and the environment that has been cultivated is one of mutual respect and compassion.

They are currently accepting new students, so I highly encourage folks to schedule a visit. Albert

My child is graduating from Little Sprouts Preschool, located in the Fruitvale district of Oakland, and I know they have several openings in the summer and fall for ages 2-5. This is an excellent playbased preschool, where my 3 children have enjoyed themselves thoroughly, where they've made deep friendships, and where they have felt safe and loved every day. It is a Christian preschool, part of New Hope Covenant Church (www.newhopeoakland.org) and the teachers pour genuine love on the kids. It is very affordable as well, and open M-F 7:30 - 6.
