Structured Literacy (aka the Orton-Gillingham or Multisensory Structured Language approach) is a step-by-step approach to teaching students to read accurately and quickly. It reduces the anxiety felt by struggling and new readers by revealing the logic of English spelling, and providing plenty of practice with each step before advancing to the next step. It covers sounds (phonemes), spelling patterns (graphemes and syllable types), meaningful word parts (morphemes), Latin, Greek, and Anglo-Saxon word roots, handwriting, vocabulary, and fluency. It is recommended by the International Dyslexia Association as the most effective way to teach dyslexic students.
