Recorder lessons for 6 year old?

My 6 year old was gifted a recorder and is interested in learning to play it. Does anyone have a teacher to recommend? I searched the archive but the recommendations are many years old. We are located in Berkeley. Thank you in advance!

Hi.

I would highly recommend you give Donna Viscuso a call (510.338.2034).  She is a professional saxophone and flute musician.  When our son was in the first grade, he wanted to learn to play the flute.  We started him on the recorder because his arms weren't yet long enough for the flute and Donna has been his teacher from the beginning (he's in the 10th grade now).  She is great with kids and really tunes in to what THEY might like to play rather than forcing them into a rigid lesson plan of standard classical repertoire.  Before COVID, our son took lessons from her at Steve Deutsch Woodwinds on Woolsey St. about 1/2 block west of Shattuck.  Since COVID, he has been doing lessons with her through a mixture of in person at local parks and via Zoom.  I don't know how she's handling new students with COVID and all, but I would definitely reach out to her to ask.  You can tell her Greg Johns referred you.

Cheers!

Greg
