Oakland Tech
Everyone says Oakland Tech is the best high school in OUSD and that we should feel lucky to be zoned for this school. As we look to high schools, I love the idea of public school and saving money up for college. We are currently in a private middle school and tuition is painful.
Reviews seem to suggest that the first year can be difficult but if you stick it out and get into one of the academies. It is great.
I would love to hear about current family experiences and especially if your kiddo came from a private school.
Is it true that security, drugs, alcohol could be an issue? There is a better chance for UC admissions than a private high school? Tech has a good music, arts and theater program?

My kid went HARD for weed and booze at Berkeley High and initially fell in with some real thugs. He's dialed back to just weed this year, which is still stressful, but I have done a lot of research and I think that you're going to find as many drugs at a private high school as a public one and how you handle it goes a really long way.
I don't quite know how BHS compares to Oakland Tech, and I would expect some adjustments going from private school, but any school is what you make it. If you're involved in a sport and you have things that matter to you, it's easy to focus on those as you find your way.
He's already going to be perceived as a rich kid, so.don't send him to school with $300 kicks and an iPhone and a wad of cash.
