Honors placement at Bishop O’Dowd

My child will be attending Bishop O’Dowd as a freshman in the fall. We recently got our placements based on their testing, and I was surprised that she did not make it into the honors English class. She has always done very well in English (all A’s) at her high performing public school, and has always tested a grade or two above grade level in standardized testing.

I understand that there will be an opportunity to move up into honors following year, but I am concerned that there may a certain ‘tracking’ that locks kids in place. Should I advocate to be placed in the honors class, and if so, any advice on how I would get that process started? I have reached out to the department head, but have not yet heard back.

Thanks!

Great opportunity for your student to advocate for herself, if she wants to be in honors. How does she feel about it?
